## Short answer

As of October 27, 2026, the Bambu Lab A1 ($299) is the best first 3D printer for most people: it ships mostly assembled, calibrates itself before every print, has a 256 mm cube build volume, and won Editor's Choice at both TechRadar and Tom's Hardware. The A1 mini ($219) is the pick for small prints and small desks. The Creality Ender 3 V3 SE ($179) is the cheapest decent starter but needs about 15 to 20 minutes of assembly. If you have kids or pets, the enclosed Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 ($319) keeps hands away from hot parts.

## What makes a printer good for beginners

The hardest part of 3D printing used to be setup: leveling the bed, setting the nozzle height and tuning settings until prints stick. The best beginner printers now do this for you. We looked for printers that arrive mostly built, calibrate themselves, and have reviewers saying first prints worked without tinkering.

Price matters too, but so does what you will print. Most toys, organizers and household fixes fit in 180 mm. Cosplay, helmets and big parts need 250 mm or more. Tougher plastics such as ABS and ASA need an enclosed printer.

We did not run our own trials. Specs and prices come from maker stores, and test results come from Tom's Hardware, TechRadar, All3DP, Notebookcheck and Hackster, named next to each finding.

## Best overall: Bambu Lab A1 ($299)

The A1 is the easiest full size printer to recommend. It ships mostly assembled and runs a full auto calibration before every print. TechRadar scored it 29 of 30 in its print quality test with a combined dimensional error of 0.099 mm, and Tom's Hardware printed a speed Benchy in 19 min 15 s.

For $399, the A1 Combo adds the AMS lite, so you can print in up to 4 colors. Color changes purge filament, so multicolor prints take longer and waste plastic.

TechRadar flagged Bambu's software as complex for beginners. The A1 is open frame, so it is not for ABS or ASA. Early A1 units sold from December 2023 to January 2024 were recalled over a heatbed cable; Bambu Lab says units sold after January 30, 2024 include the fix.

## Best for small prints: Bambu Lab A1 mini ($219)

The A1 mini has the same auto calibration in a smaller body with a 180 mm cube build volume. Tom's Hardware called it fast, quiet and easy to use. Bambu Lab rates it as quiet as 49 dB.

All3DP found it consistent and reliable but complained about a rattling purge wiper and a laggy touchscreen. The bed tops out at 80 C, so it is a PLA and PETG printer. The Combo with the AMS lite costs $329.

## Cheapest: Creality Ender 3 V3 SE ($179)

The Ender 3 V3 SE is the lowest price printer on our list. Creality ships it about 90% built, with 15 to 20 minutes of assembly left. Tom's Hardware printed a Benchy in 41 minutes with no ringing or layer shifts, and PETG and TPU printed cleanly.

It is slower than the Bambu printers and has no camera. Tom's Hardware found the coated plate too sticky. Buy it if you want to learn how a printer works and do not mind a little tuning.

## Best for homes with kids or pets: Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 ($319)

An enclosed printer keeps small hands and paws away from the hot nozzle and bed. The Centauri Carbon 2 is the cheapest enclosed printer on our list at $319, with a 256 mm cube build volume.

Notebookcheck found PLA and PETG printed cleanly on stock profiles and measured 44 to 47 dB on average. It can add 4 colors with Elegoo's CANVAS unit, sold in the $369 Combo.

## Also consider

The Prusa MINI+ ($549) costs more for a small printer, but Prusa includes a free beginner course and is known for support and spare parts. Tom's Hardware called it professional quality on a small scale.

The Bambu Lab P1S ($399) is a step up: it is enclosed, prints ABS and ASA, and Bambu claims about 15 minutes from unboxing to first print. Tom's Hardware found it noisy.
