# Neakasa M1 error lights and app alerts explained

The Neakasa M1 does not use number error codes. It shows faults as red, yellow or orange lights on its five buttons, plus alerts in the Neakasa app. This page explains each light in the M1 manual and the fixes Neakasa support gives for the most common alerts.

## Short answer

As of October 27, 2026, the Neakasa M1 shows errors as button lights, not codes. A blinking red Level light means there is not enough litter: fill to 50% to 100% of the scale, ideally over 70%. A blinking red Empty light means the waste bin is full or the bag is not set flat. A blinking yellow Clean or Level light just means a cat interrupted the cycle, and the box restarts about 1 minute after the cat leaves. All five lights blinking red means a weighing sensor error: unplug, power back on, and contact Neakasa if it keeps blinking.

| Light | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ON/OFF blinking red | Weight sensor overloaded | Remove any extra objects from the litter box; contact support if nothing is there |
| ON/OFF steady red | Left or right litter chamber fixed cover not installed | Fit the cover, or check that it is seated properly |
| Clean blinking red | Chamber door motor blocked | Remove the litter chamber and clear anything stuck in the door at the bottom |
| Clean steady red | Litter chamber motor blocked | Remove the left or right fixed cover and clear anything stuck in the gear |
| Clean blinking yellow | Cleaning interrupted by the cat | Wait for the cat to leave; the cycle restarts after about 1 minute |
| Level blinking red | Not enough cat litter | Fill to 50% to 100% of the scale (over 70% is best); recalibrate the litter level if it still blinks |
| Level steady red | Litter chamber not in position | Put the waste bin back and fit the left and right fixed covers |
| Level blinking yellow | Leveling interrupted by the cat | Wait for the cat to leave; leveling restarts after about 1 minute |
| Level steady yellow | Too much cat litter | Remove litter until it is within 50% to 100% of the scale |
| Empty blinking red | Waste bin full, or the trash bag is not set properly | Empty the bin and fit a new bag flat with no loose folds |
| Empty steady red | Waste bin not in position | Pull the waste bin out and push it back in fully |
| WIFI steady orange | Network disconnected | Check your Wi-Fi, restart the box, or hold the WIFI button 3 seconds and reconnect in the app |
| All five lights blinking red | Weighing sensor error | Unplug, then power on again; contact support if the red lights still blink |
| App: motor overload | A motor is straining | Check for litter in the bin motor gear, check the liner, use the original adapter, and use less litter |
| App: waste bin full (bin is empty) | Bag folds or a dirty sensor trigger a false alarm | Smooth the bag flat and wipe the sensor at the bottom of the bin |
| App: not enough litter, cannot level | Litter level reading is off | Hold the Level button 10 seconds to recalibrate (about 3 minutes, ends with blue blinking and a beep) |

## How the M1 shows errors

The M1 has five buttons along the front: ON/OFF, Clean, Level, Empty and WIFI. In normal use most of them stay dark. Green breathing means a cycle is running and blinking white means the box is resetting. A red, yellow or orange light means something needs attention, and the button that lights up tells you which part to check.

Yellow is the mildest. It means a cat stepped in during a cycle, and the box will finish on its own about a minute after the cat leaves. Red means the box has stopped and needs you. The Neakasa app shows matching alerts, such as waste bin full or motor overload.

## Litter level lights and alerts

Most M1 alerts are about the amount of litter. The manual says to keep litter between 50% and 100% of the scale and to top up when it falls below 60%. Too little gives a blinking red Level light. Too much gives a steady yellow Level light. About a minute after you add litter, the box levels it and updates the reading.

If you switch to a different litter, the level reading can be off. Neakasa says to hold the Level button for 10 seconds to recalibrate. It takes about 3 minutes and ends with a blinking blue light and a beep.

## Waste bin and cleaning errors

A blinking red Empty light or a bin full alert usually means the bin is full. If you just emptied it, Neakasa says the most common cause is a bag whose corners are not flat, which blocks the sensor. Take the bag out and check if the alert clears, then fit it again with the corners smoothed out. If it still says full, wipe the sensor at the bottom of the bin with a clean paper towel.

If the box does not clean itself, Neakasa lists several checks. Make sure there is at least 30% litter (60% to 90% is recommended), check whether kitten mode, do not disturb or smart cleaning is set, and make sure the box is not on a litter mat or too close to a wall. Cats under 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) may be too light for the sensors, so pick the matching cat mode.

## Motor overload, tipping and weighing problems

A motor overload alert, or a drum that spins all the way round or tips, has the same first steps. Remove the waste bin and look for litter or debris stuck in the motor gear. Check that the silicone liner is fitted correctly. Use only the original power adapter. Then reduce the amount of litter and try again. For tipping, Neakasa also says to unplug the box for 1 minute first.

If cat weights look wrong, keep the box about 5 cm (2 in) from walls and off soft mats or carpet, and make sure it stands level. Then hold the Level button for 10 seconds to recalibrate. Neakasa also suggests lifting the box about 5 cm and setting it down flat before calibrating.

## When a repeat error means a worn part

One red light after a litter spill is normal. The same motor light again and again, even after you clear the gears and fit the liner, can point to a worn motor or gear. All five lights blinking red that returns after a restart points to a failing weighing sensor. A waste bin full alert that comes back with a flat bag and a clean sensor suggests the bin sensor itself is faulty.

Squeaking or creaking from friction is a wear sign too. Neakasa has a video showing where to apply lubricant. For any other new noise, contact support rather than taking the box apart.

## When to contact Neakasa support

Contact Neakasa at support@neakasa.com if a fix from the manual or support center does not work, if a red light stays after a restart, or if the box will not turn on with a working outlet and adapter. Neakasa asks for your order number, the serial number (SN) and a short video showing the problem.

Keep your order confirmation, since it proves the purchase date for warranty claims. Do not use a third party power adapter, because Neakasa lists the original adapter as a check for several faults.

## Questions people ask

### Why is the Level light blinking red on my Neakasa M1?

There is not enough litter. Fill it to 50% to 100% of the scale, ideally over 70%. If it still blinks, recalibrate by holding the Level button for 10 seconds.

### Why does my Neakasa M1 say the waste bin is full when it is empty?

Usually the bag corners are not flat and block the sensor. Smooth the bag out and refit it. If the alert stays, wipe the sensor at the bottom of the bin with a clean paper towel.

### What does a yellow light mean on the Neakasa M1?

A blinking yellow Clean or Level light means a cat interrupted the cycle. The box restarts about a minute after the cat leaves. A steady yellow Level light means there is too much litter.

### Why are all the lights blinking red on my Neakasa M1?

Five red lights blinking together means a weighing sensor error. Unplug the box, power it back on, and contact Neakasa support if the red lights still blink.

### How do I fix a motor overload alert on the Neakasa M1?

Remove the waste bin and clear litter from the motor gear, check the silicone liner is fitted right, use the original adapter, and reduce the amount of litter.
