## Short answer

For kids under 10, a toy like the WowWee Dog-E (about $80) is the safe pick. For kids 10 and up who want to build and code, the Petoi Bittle X starts at $319 as a kit. Sony aibo ($2,899.99 with 3 years of cloud service) is the most lifelike pet. The Unitree Go2 ($1,600 to $4,500 direct) is a real walking quadruped, but it weighs about 33 lb and is not a toy.

## Pick by age and budget

Robot dogs fall into four groups. Toys cost under $200. Coding kits cost $300 to $500. Pet companions like aibo cost about $3,000. Real quadruped robots start around $1,600 and climb fast.

Under age 10, stick with toys. Ages 10 and up can handle a kit like Petoi Bittle, which the maker rates for 10 and older, or younger with an adult. A Unitree Go2 is a powerful machine that belongs with teens or adults who will read the manual.

## Toy robot dogs: under $200

The WowWee Dog-E sold for about $80 when KTLA covered it. It reacts to touch, motion and voice, plays built in games, and shows pictures and text on its tail. KTLA reported that the data it hears stays on a closed system that is not connected to the internet. RoboZaps listed it at $79.99 in July 2026 but said stock is thinning.

The Joy for All Companion Pup costs $179.99 on the maker's site. It wags, barks back when you talk and lets you feel a heartbeat. It runs on 4 C batteries, which are included. It does not walk. The maker aims it at older adults. Both colors showed as out of stock on its own site when we checked, with a link to Amazon.

KEYi Loona is a $499 wheeled pet robot, per RoboZaps. It has face recognition and voice chat, but it is not shaped like a dog.

## Watch out for scam robot dog ads

RoboZaps warns about social media ads for robot dogs named Wuffy and Nicoo. It describes them as drop ship stores selling simple plush toys that walk a few steps, with permanent countdown discounts and no company address. One buyer paid over $40 and later found the same item on Temu for under $6.

Its red flags are easy to check. Look for a real company name and address, sale through known retailers, and reviews on independent sites. If an ad shows a $40 toy doing things that real robots costing over $1,500 do, skip it.

## Coding kits: Petoi Bittle and Bittle X

Petoi's Bittle X V2 is a palm sized robot dog you can build yourself or buy ready to go. The maker lists the kit at $319 and the preassembled version at $339. Alloy servo versions cost $379 and $399, and versions with a robotic arm cost $449 and $469. Petoi says assembly takes 40 to 90 minutes.

Kids can code it with Scratch style blocks, then move to Python or C++. Bittle X also takes more than 35 voice commands. Petoi lists about one hour of walking per charge, a 30 day return policy and a one year warranty. The page showed the product as sold out when we checked, so availability may vary.

The original Bittle is in final stock. Only the $349 preassembled alloy version showed as available on Petoi's page.

## Sony aibo: the most lifelike pet

Sony launched the aibo Espresso Edition in the US at $2,899.99. It came with a three year AI Cloud Plan, a charging station and a pink ball. Sony said the cloud plan lets aibo build its personality and that the My aibo app needs the plan. Sony also said it could not sell or ship that edition to Baltimore, Maryland or Illinois.

RoboZaps reports cloud renewal costs $300 a year after year three. It lists about 2 hours of play per charge, and aibo walks back to its charger. It recognizes faces and learns tricks. Sony's guidance limits it to indoor floors, away from stairs and shag carpet, according to RoboZaps.

In June 2026 Sony said it would stop selling aibo in Japan once stock runs out, The Star reported. Sony said support, parts and cloud subscriptions will continue. Sony did not say what happens to US sales.

## Unitree Go2: a real quadruped robot

Unitree sells the Go2 direct in three main versions: Air at $1,600, Pro at $2,800 and X at $4,500, before tax and shipping. The EDU version for developers is priced by quote. US dealer Global Drone HQ listed the Go2 Pro at $3,790 in August 2026.

Unitree says the Go2 weighs about 15 kg (about 33 lb) with its battery. It runs about 1 to 2 hours per charge and uses a 4D lidar sensor to avoid obstacles. The Air tops out around 2.5 m/s (about 5.6 mph) and the Pro around 3.5 m/s. Unitree notes some functions still need a human operator or custom programming.

## Safety and security before you buy a big robot dog

- Size and power: the Go2 weighs about 33 lb and Unitree lists a working maximum power of about 3,000 W. Keep small children and pets clear when it runs.

- Security: Tech Times reports a Bluetooth exploit called UniPwn that can give root access to the Go2, with no firmware patch released as of July 2026.

- US rules: on July 28, 2026 the FCC added new foreign made humanoid and quadruped robots to its Covered List. RoboZaps reports previously authorized models remain legal to sell and use, so check the FCC ID on the unit you buy.

- Updates: RoboZaps reports an FCC waiver lets covered robots authorized before July 28 keep getting security and software updates through at least January 1, 2029.

- Floors and stairs: Sony's guidance keeps aibo off slippery floors and away from stairs, per RoboZaps.

- Small parts: Petoi's kit has small parts and is rated for ages 10 and up.

## What about Boston Dynamics Spot?

Spot is the robot dog most people picture, but it is not a home product. When sales opened in 2020, TechCrunch reported a price of $74,500 for the Spot Explorer kit. It was sold to US businesses under terms that require beneficial use. Families looking for a walking robot dog should look at the Go2 or a Petoi kit instead.
