# Roomba keeps getting stuck: causes and fixes

A Roomba that keeps getting stuck is usually caught on a low obstacle, has a dirty wheel or cliff sensor, or keeps finding the same trap under furniture. Here are iRobot's fixes, matched to the error it reports.

## Short answer

Most Roombas get stuck on the same few spots: under low furniture, on rug edges, or on dark rugs they read as a drop. Error 1, 5 and 7 mean a wheel is stuck, Error 6 means the cliff sensors see a drop, and Error 9 means the bumper is jammed. Clean the wheels, cliff sensors and bumper, then block repeat trouble spots with a Keep Out Zone in the app or a Virtual Wall.

| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Error 1, wheel hanging down | Caught on an obstacle or uneven surface | Lift it to the middle of the room and restart; push the wheels up and down and shake out debris |
| Error 5 or 7 | Side wheel stuck | Free the wheel by hand so it turns, then clean it; both wheels should turn with the same resistance |
| Error 6 on a dark rug | Dark surface read as a drop | Wipe the cliff sensors with a dry cloth; block the rug with a Virtual Wall |
| Error 6 at a stair edge | Rug hanging over a step looks like a cliff | Lay the rug flat against the stair edge, move the robot and press CLEAN |
| Error 9 | Bumper stuck or bumper sensor dirty | Tap the bumper firmly several times to free debris; if nothing is found the bumper may be loose |
| Error 10 | Side wheel stuck or bumper not sensing | Free the side wheels and check the bumper moves freely |
| Error 2 on thick carpet | Rubber brushes slowed by high pile rugs | Clean the brushes and test on hard floor; new brushes may need a few runs to loosen |
| Stuck in the same spot every run | A trap the robot keeps finding | Add a Keep Out Zone on the map; the app suggests one when it sees repeat stucks |
| Error 18, cannot get home | Wheels dirty, dock moved or dock in sunlight | Clear the wheel wells, clean the caster wheel, keep the dock 4 ft from stairs and out of direct sun |
| Wheel error under the sofa | Owner fix: furniture pressing on the robot's top | Owner fix: check for something pressing the top of the robot under the sofa; iRobot support suggested this in an owner thread |

## Step by step checks, in order

iRobot's stuck errors all start with the same basics. Do these first, then look up the error number below.

- Lift the robot and put it in the middle of the room, then press CLEAN to restart.

- Turn it over and spin both side wheels by hand. They should turn freely with equal resistance. Push each wheel up and down several times and shake loose debris out of the wheel well.

- Pull out the front caster wheel, clear hair from its axle and well, and push it back until it clicks.

- Wipe the cliff sensors under the front edge with a clean, dry cloth.

- Tap the bumper firmly several times to free trapped debris, and check it moves in and out.

- Pick up cords, socks and loose rug fringe before the next run.

## Fix the room, not just the robot

iRobot says Roombas treat a drop of about 3.5 inches as a cliff and can read dark surfaces as drops too. That is why a robot may stop on a black rug or circle at a stair edge where a rug hangs over. Lay rugs flat against stair edges, and block dark rugs or problem corners with a Virtual Wall.

On mapping models, use Keep Out Zones. You draw a rectangle on the map in the iRobot HOME app and the robot skips it, whether you start it from the app, a voice assistant or the CLEAN button. iRobot suggests them for pet bowls and cluttered spots, and the app recommends one when it sees the robot getting stuck in the same area again and again.

Owner fix: in an owner thread where a Roomba kept reporting a wheel error under a sofa and end tables, support suggested something under the furniture might be pressing on the top of the robot and lifting a wheel. Measure the gap, or block that spot.

## When to replace a part

If a side wheel will not turn freely after cleaning, or the error keeps coming back on a flat floor, the wheel module may be worn. iRobot says worn, dislodged or torn wheels need iRobot Customer Care. Error 2 on j series robots can mean worn multi surface rubber brushes; iRobot says to replace them if the error returns with clean brushes. A bumper that stays pressed with no debris behind it may have come loose and needs iRobot's dislodged bumper steps. Buy parts from the iRobot Store or an authorized retailer.

## When to contact iRobot support or use the warranty

Contact iRobot Customer Care if Error 1, 6 or 9 keeps returning after cleaning, if Error 2 continues with the brushes removed, or if a wheel is damaged. Have the robot charged and with you, plus its serial number and proof of purchase for a warranty claim.

## When a new robot makes more sense

If your home has lots of cords, socks and pet mess on the floor, an older Roomba without obstacle avoidance will keep getting caught however clean it is. Newer models with a front camera dodge more clutter. Compare current options in our robot vacuum rankings before buying new wheel modules for an old robot.

## Questions people ask

### Why does my Roomba keep getting stuck on my rug?

Dark rugs can look like a drop to the cliff sensors, and thick rugs can slow the brushes and trigger Error 2. Clean the cliff sensors and brushes, and block the rug with a Virtual Wall or Keep Out Zone if it keeps happening.

### What does Roomba Error 1 mean?

A side wheel is hanging down or stuck, usually on an obstacle. Move the robot to the middle of the room, check the wheels turn freely and restart.

### How do I stop my Roomba going under the couch?

Add a Keep Out Zone over that area in the iRobot HOME app, or place a Virtual Wall barrier in front of it.

### Why does my Roomba stop at the top of the stairs and beep?

That is Error 6. The cliff sensors see a drop. Clean the sensors and make sure no rug hangs over the stair edge.

### Why does my Roomba say bumper stuck?

Error 9 means the bumper is pressed in or its sensor is dirty. Tap it firmly a few times to free debris. If nothing comes out, the bumper may be loose.
