# Roomba won't connect to WiFi: causes and fixes

A Roomba that won't connect to WiFi is usually on the wrong band, on a guest or WPA3 network, or blocked by a password with odd characters. Here are iRobot's own setup fixes for the iRobot HOME and Roomba Home apps.

## Short answer

The most common causes are a 2.4 GHz only Roomba trying to join a 5 GHz network, a guest or WPA3 network, and a password with special characters or one that was pasted. Put the dock near the router, connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network, turn on Bluetooth and Precise Location, and type the password by hand. If setup still fails, iRobot says to reboot the robot, restart the router for 10 seconds and reinstall the app.

| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Robot not found in the app | Phone on 5 GHz while the Roomba only supports 2.4 GHz | Connect your phone to the 2.4 GHz network name, the one without 5G or 5 at the end; after two failed tries, pick the robot's temporary network by hand |
| Setup fails on a mesh router | Mesh sends the phone to 5 GHz | Turn off 5 GHz in the mesh app during setup, then turn it back on |
| Incorrect password message | Special characters or a pasted password | Type the password by hand and remove characters the app flags |
| Fails on every try | WPA3 security or a guest network | Use a WPA2 home network; iRobot says WPA3 is not supported and guest networks are not recommended |
| Cannot Connect right after setup | Robot lost the saved WiFi details | Go to Product Settings, WiFi Settings and choose reconnect or change WiFi, then re enter the password |
| Error C1CD or BRC1CD | Robot registered to another account | Choose Change ownership in the app and follow the factory reset steps |
| No sound when you press the button | Robot not seated on a powered dock | Send it home or place it within 6 ft of the dock facing it, and confirm the dock light is solid |
| Setup starts on an iPad but fails | Tablets are no longer supported for setup | Use a phone with iOS 15 or Android 9 or later (iOS 17 or Android 11 for the Roomba Home app) |
| Works on hotspot, not at home | Router, firewall, ad blocker or VPN blocking it | Restart the router, turn off VPN and ad blockers, or ask your ISP to open the ports iRobot lists |
| Known problem router | Router model on iRobot's list (for example Sagemcom F@st 5260, ZTE ZXHN F670) | Update router firmware; for listed incompatible models, use a different router |

## First, check which app and which band your Roomba uses

iRobot now has two apps. The newer Roomba Home app covers the Roomba Mini, 100 and 1000, 200 and 2000, Plus 400 and 500, 600 and Max 700 and 800 series. Most other WiFi models use the classic iRobot HOME app.

Band matters most. iRobot lists these as working on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz: Combo 10 Max, Combo j7+ and j9+, Combo j5, j7, j9, s9 and i6, i7 and i8. These are 2.4 GHz only: Roomba Essential, i1 to i5, Combo i5, Combo i8, Combo, 900, WiFi connected 800, and 670 and 690. If yours is 2.4 GHz only, your phone must be on the 2.4 GHz network during setup.

## Step by step checks, in order

iRobot's setup guide lists these checks. Work down the list and retry setup after each one.

- Put the dock on a level spot as close to the router as you can, and confirm the dock light is on with the robot on it.

- Turn on Bluetooth, Location Services and Precise Location on your phone, and keep the phone on the same network the robot will use.

- Use your main home network, not a guest network, and make sure it is not WPA3 only.

- Type the WiFi password by hand. Do not paste it.

- Refresh everything: reboot the robot, unplug the router for 10 seconds and wait 2 minutes, then uninstall and reinstall the app.

- Try a second phone. If it works there, something on the first phone is blocking setup.

- Try a different network, such as a hotspot from a second phone running on cellular. If the hotspot works and home WiFi does not, the problem is your router, firewall, ad blocker or VPN.

## How to reboot or reset the Roomba

A reboot clears many errors and does not delete maps or schedules. From the app, use Reboot Roomba in the settings. By hand, take the robot off the dock and hold the button for your model: Power for 10 seconds on 100, 200, Plus and Max models, CLEAN for 20 seconds on i and s series, Home for 9 seconds on j series and Combo 10 Max. On the classic app, iRobot also suggests holding CLEAN for about 20 seconds with the robot on the dock until it plays a tune.

A factory reset wipes the robot and removes it from your account, so iRobot says to try a reboot first. You need it for C1CD and BRC1CD errors, where the robot is still registered to someone else.

## When to contact iRobot support

If a phone hotspot also fails, the robot's WiFi part may be faulty. Contact iRobot Customer Care with the robot, its serial number and proof of purchase. If the hotspot works, the fault is in your home network, so contact your internet provider or router maker and ask them to open the discovery, HTTPS and MQTT ports listed in iRobot's article. Mesh owners should reboot the main router first, then each satellite.

## When a new robot makes more sense

WiFi trouble alone is rarely a reason to replace a Roomba, since it still cleans with its CLEAN button. If you need app features like maps and Keep Out Zones and your model is below the 670, it has no WiFi at all, so an app based model from our robot vacuum rankings is the only way to get them.

## Questions people ask

### Does Roomba work with 5 GHz WiFi?

Some do. iRobot lists the Combo 10 Max, Combo j7+, j9+, Combo j5, j7, j9, s9 and i6, i7 and i8 as dual band. Essential, i1 to i5, 900, 800 and 600 series models need 2.4 GHz.

### Why does my Roomba say incorrect password when it is right?

iRobot says some special characters are not accepted and pasted passwords can fail. Type the password by hand, and change the router password if the app flags a character.

### What does error C1CD mean on a Roomba?

The robot is still registered to another account. Use the Change ownership option in the app, which walks you through a factory reset, then register it again.

### Can I set up a Roomba with an iPad?

No. iRobot says iPads and tablets are no longer supported for setup, and foldable phones are often treated as tablets.

### Will rebooting my Roomba delete my maps?

No. iRobot says a reboot keeps maps, schedules and preferences. A factory reset is the one that wipes data.
