# Shark robot vacuum error codes: what each one means and how to fix it

Shark robot vacuum error codes are numbers shown in the SharkClean app and as light patterns on the robot. Error 2, 4 and 5 mean a stuck side brush, brushroll or drive wheel, 7 is the cliff sensors, 9 the dust bin, 23 the base and 26 a dust bin blockage.

## Short answer

As of October 27, 2026, the Shark robot errors people see most are Error 2 (side brush stuck: clear debris), Error 4 (brushroll blocked: clear hair from the roll), Error 5 (drive wheel stuck: clean the wheels and axles), Error 7 (cliff sensors: move the robot and clean the sensors), Error 9 (dust bin not seated: push it in until it clicks), Error 10 and 16 (robot stuck: move it to a flat, open spot) and Error 23 (cannot find the base: check the base has power and a clear path). The light pattern for each code differs by model, so read the number in the SharkClean app.

| Code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Error 2 | Side brush is stuck | Clear debris around the side brush so it spins freely |
| Error 3 | Suction motor failure | Empty the dust bin, clean the filters, remove the brushroll and its door, and clear any blockage |
| Error 4 | Brushroll is blocked | Remove debris around and inside the brushroll so it spins freely |
| Error 5 | Drive wheel is stuck | Clean the wheels and remove anything wrapped around the axles |
| Error 6 | Front bumper may be jammed | Clean the bumper and check it moves in and out freely |
| Error 7 | Cliff sensor error | Move the robot to a new spot and clean the cliff sensors |
| Error 9 | Dust bin not seated | Push the robot dust bin back in until it clicks |
| Error 10 | Robot may be stuck on an obstacle | Move it to a new spot on a level surface |
| Error 16 | Robot is stuck | Move it and check that the front bumper moves freely |
| Error 18 (Matrix 2300 series) | Shown with errors 2, 4 and 5; one possible cause is a wheel motor encoder failure | Clear the side brush, brushroll and wheels; if that does not help, call Shark for the encoder |
| Error 23 | Robot cannot find the base | Make sure the base is plugged in, powered on and free of obstacles |
| Error 24 | Battery critically low | Put the robot on the base and check the base light shows it is charging |
| Error 26 | Dust bin blockage | Check the evacuation ports on the base and robot for clogs, then refit the base dust bin until it clicks |
| Error 33 (PowerDetect and Detect Pro) | Possible blockage of the lifting suspension | Turn the robot off and clear anything blocking the wheel suspension |
| Error 36 (PowerDetect and Detect Pro) | Possible blockage in the base | Unplug the base and clear anything blocking the spot where the robot sits |
| Wi-Fi error (Matrix 2300 series) | Wrong Wi-Fi password, network not found, or cannot connect | Check the password and try again; reboot the robot and router |

## How Shark shows error codes

Shark robots show a fault two ways. The SharkClean app shows the error number, and the lights on top of the robot flash a pattern. The pattern for the same code is different on each model line, so the app number is the easier way to look it up.

The numbers themselves stay mostly the same across current Shark robots. Error 9 is the dust bin and Error 23 is the base on both the Matrix 2300 series and the newer PowerDetect and Detect Pro lines. Newer models add codes for their own parts, such as Error 33 for the lifting suspension and Error 36 for a blockage in the base.

Older Shark ION robots from the RV700 series do not use numbers. Their manual lists light combinations instead. For example, DOCK and SPOT flashing together means a blocked brushroll, and CLEAN solid red means the dust bin is out.

## Stuck parts: errors 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

These codes all mean a moving part is jammed. Hair and string are the usual cause.

- Turn the robot over on a soft surface.

- Error 2: pull hair off the side brush and check it spins by hand.

- Error 4: take out the brushroll and clear it, including the ends.

- Error 5: clean both drive wheels and unwind anything wrapped around the axles.

- Error 6: clean the bumper and press it to check it moves in and out.

- Error 3: empty the bin, clean the filters and check the brushroll area for a clog in the suction path.

## Stuck, lost and charging: errors 7, 10, 16, 23 and 24

Error 7 is the cliff sensors on the bottom of the robot. Move the robot and wipe them clean. Errors 10 and 16 mean the robot is stuck on something. Move it to a flat, open spot and check the bumper is free.

Error 23 means the robot cannot find its base. Check the base is plugged in and switched on, with nothing in front of it. Error 24 means the battery is almost flat; put the robot on the base by hand.

For a full reboot on the PowerDetect and Detect Pro lines, Shark says to press and hold the DOCK button for 5 to 7 seconds to power off, then hold it again or slide the robot onto the base to power on. For Wi-Fi trouble, power it off for 10 seconds, restart your phone and router, and try again in the app.

## Dust bin and base errors: 9, 26 and 36

Error 9 just means the robot bin is not fully in. Push it until it clicks. Error 26 means the self empty path is clogged. Check the evacuation ports on the robot and the base, clear them, and refit the base bin until it clicks.

Error 36 on the PowerDetect and Detect Pro lines points to the base itself. Unplug it first, then clear anything in the spot where the robot parks.

## When a repeat error means a worn part, and when to call Shark

If an error clears and then comes back after a full clean, a part may be worn. Error 4 that keeps returning on a clean, free spinning brushroll suggests the brushroll or its motor. Error 5 that returns when both wheels turn freely points to the drive wheel. On the Matrix 2300 series, Shark lists a wheel motor encoder failure under the same light pattern as errors 2, 4 and 5 and says to contact customer service for it. Error 3 that stays after you clear every blockage and clean the filters suggests the suction motor. Error 24 showing up often, even after full charges, can mean the battery is wearing out.

Call Shark customer service when an error stays after these steps. The owner's guides list a one year limited warranty from the purchase date for the original owner. Wear items such as filters are not covered. Have your receipt and the model and serial number from the QR code label on the bottom of the robot ready before you call.

## Questions people ask

### What does Shark robot error 2 mean?

The side brush is stuck. Clear hair and debris around it until it spins freely.

### What does error 9 mean on a Shark robot vacuum?

The robot dust bin is not seated. Push it back in until it clicks.

### How do I fix Shark robot error 7?

Error 7 is a cliff sensor error. Move the robot to a new spot and wipe the cliff sensors on its underside clean.

### What does Shark error 23 mean?

The robot cannot find its base. Make sure the base is plugged in and powered on, and clear anything around it.

### What is Shark robot error 26?

There is a blockage in the dust bin path. Check the evacuation ports on the robot and base for clogs, then refit the base dust bin until it clicks.

### How do I reset a Shark robot vacuum?

On PowerDetect and Detect Pro models, hold the DOCK button for 5 to 7 seconds to power off, then hold it again or place the robot on the base to power on.
