## Short answer

You cannot buy a Tesla Optimus as of October 15, 2026. Tesla has not announced a price or opened preorders. Musk has said the robot could cost $20,000 to $30,000 at scale and that Tesla could be selling humanoids to the public by the end of 2027; both are promises. Tesla's own shareholder letters talk about factory production, not home delivery.

| Claim | Who and when | What happened (as of Oct 15, 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Price of $20,000 to $30,000 | Musk, 2024 event | No price published by Tesla |
| About 10,000 robots built in 2025 | Musk, January 2025 | Missed; Electrek says the target was missed entirely |
| At least 5,000 robots in 2025 | Musk, March 2025 staff meeting (reported by The Information via heise) | Reportedly cut to 2,000, then missed |
| Gen 3 unveil in Q1 2026 | Tesla Q4 2025 letter, Jan 28, 2026 | Pushed to mid 2026; not unveiled as of Oct 2026 |
| Fremont production start late July or August 2026 | Musk, Q1 2026 call, Apr 22, 2026 | No confirmed start of commercial Gen 3 production by Aug 31 |
| More than 1,000 a week by end of 2026 | Tesla, reported by BGR, Oct 7, 2026 | Pending |
| Public sales by end of 2027 | Musk, Davos, Jan 22, 2026 | Pending; no preorders |

## Price: only estimates so far

Tesla has never published a price for Optimus. The number most people quote comes from Elon Musk, who said at a 2024 event that the robot could cost $20,000 to $30,000 and that the price should fall over time. Standard Bots notes Musk has repeated that range for full scale production.

Others expect more at launch. BGR cites industry analysts estimating $50,000 to $100,000 per robot at release. Treat every figure as a guess until Tesla posts an order page.

## Release timing claims vs what happened

Optimus was announced at Tesla's AI Day in 2021. Since then the production dates have moved several times.

In January 2025 Musk predicted roughly 10,000 Optimus robots would be built that year. Electrek reports Tesla missed that target entirely. Heise, citing The Information, reported that a goal of at least 5,000 robots in 2025 was cut to about 2,000 because of hand design problems. Quartz reported in July 2025 that Tesla was falling behind its 5,000 unit goal.

In its January 28, 2026 shareholder letter Tesla said it planned to unveil Gen 3 in Q1 2026 and start production before the end of 2026. On the April 22, 2026 earnings call Musk moved the reveal to "probably middle of this year" and said Fremont production would start around late July or August, with output "quite slow" at first. Electrek reported Tesla blamed the reveal delay on competitors copying its designs.

Tesla's July 22, 2026 shareholder letter said Fremont production would begin "soon" and that early builds would go to its Optimus Academy for data collection, according to HumanoidVersus. Customer shipments were not promised.

Two Weeks, which tracks Tesla deadlines, marked the July to August production start as missed on August 31, 2026 and noted that Gen 3 still had not been publicly unveiled as of October 2026.

## What is confirmed

- Optimus is not for sale, and there is no preorder for homes or businesses (BGR, October 7, 2026).

- Tesla is converting its former Model S and Model X line in Fremont to build Optimus (Electrek, April 2026).

- Optimus robots are reportedly working inside Tesla factories, but The Information reported hand and forearm assembly problems slowing the ramp (via BGR).

- In January 2026 Musk said Optimus was "still very much in the R&D phase" and, per Electrek, admitted no Optimus robots were yet doing useful work in Tesla factories.

- The robot is 5 ft 8 in tall; BGR reports it can deadlift 150 lbs and carry up to 45 lbs while walking.

## What is still only promised

- A price of $20,000 to $30,000.

- More than 1,000 robots a week by the end of 2026, which BGR says would be about 10 times Tesla's Q2 2026 output.

- A second, higher volume Optimus factory at Giga Texas around summer 2027.

- Selling humanoid robots to the public by the end of 2027, which Musk said at Davos depends on "very high reliability, very high safety, and very high range of functionality."

- Doing "whatever you can think of" in the home, as Musk put it in 2024.

## Should you wait for Optimus?

If you want a home robot in the next year, Optimus is not an option. Tesla's own plan puts factory work first and public sales no earlier than late 2027, and its past production dates have slipped.

The only full size home humanoid with a public price and a US preorder right now is the 1X NEO, and it has not shipped to customers either. Single task robots for laundry, lawns, pools and litter boxes are on sale today. See our list of every home humanoid on sale or preorder and our robots by chore.
