Litter-Robot 4 drawer full light on when the drawer is not full

A Litter-Robot 4 that flashes blue with an empty drawer is usually reading a loose or dark bag, dusty curtain sensors, or fur in the globe seal strips. Whisker's fix is to flatten a white liner, clean the bezel sensors, update the firmware and, if needed, recalibrate the drawer full indicator.

Short answer

A flashing blue light bar is the drawer full indicator, and false alerts usually come from a stretched or dark bag, dust on the curtain sensors, fur in the globe seal strips or clumps at the waste port. Start by pushing the liner flat against the drawer walls and bottom, then press Reset and Cycle. If it still flashes, clean the bezel sensors and update the firmware. Whisker's last home fix is a DFI recalibration with the gray card or a sheet of white paper in the drawer.

How the drawer full indicator works

The Litter-Robot 4 measures the drawer with the curtain sensors in the top of the bezel. During each Clean cycle, the DFI reads the waste level as the waste port passes over the drawer. When it decides the drawer is full, the light bar flashes blue and the app sends a notice. The unit then cycles two more times and stops until you empty it.

Because it uses lasers looking down into the drawer, anything that changes what the sensor sees can trigger a false full reading: a bag bunched up toward the top, a dark bag, dust on the lenses, fur in the seal strips or a clump sitting in the waste port.

Step by step checks, in order

Whisker says a solid blue light bar after the unit returns Home means a step worked. If it still flashes blue, go to the next one.

  • Confirm the unit is plugged in, online and on current firmware.
  • Replace the liner and push the bag flat against the drawer's side walls and bottom. Use a white bag. Press Reset, then Cycle.
  • Wipe the bezel sensor area with a dry, clean cloth and vacuum it with a brush attachment. Use a cotton swab on the sensors if needed, then short press Reset and Cycle.
  • Update the firmware from the Whisker app.
  • With the unit at Home, turn it off and unplug it. Open the bonnet, unlatch its center tab, lift the globe out by the black handle and check the seal strips and the waste port opening for fur, clumps or objects.
  • Reinstall the globe with the handle and waste port facing up and the black gear meshed with the white drive gear. Close the bonnet until the latches snap, press the center tab down, plug in and press Cycle.

How to recalibrate the drawer full indicator

Whisker's recalibration sheet asks for firmware 1175.5021.289 or newer, the unit plugged in and online, and a Cycle first to clear clumps. Remove the liner and wipe the drawer. Lay the gray recalibration card from the welcome kit flat on the bottom, blank side up, or a sheet of plain white paper. Put the drawer back without the liner.

Press Power to turn the unit off but leave it plugged in. Wait at least 5 seconds, then press Connect, Reset, Connect, Empty, Cycle, one at a time and each within 5 seconds of the last. A lamp test runs, the globe moves to the dump position with a green round robin light, then shows solid yellow with flashing green while it calibrates. Solid yellow with flashing blue for 5 seconds means success. Solid yellow with flashing red means it failed; clean the laser sensors and repeat. Whisker notes the lights may differ on LR4S serial numbers. You can leave the paper under the liner for better accuracy.

When to replace a part or contact support

If the light keeps flashing blue after cleaning and a failed calibration, Whisker says you need a Litter-Robot 4 Laser Board or a Litter-Robot 4 Base. Damaged seal strips are a cheaper part you can replace yourself. Under the WhiskerCare warranty, request the laser board through My Robots at litter-robot.com and it ships at no cost; out of warranty you buy the part and follow Whisker's installation guide.

Whisker support is at 1.877.250.7729, Monday to Friday 9 AM to 9 PM EST and weekends 9 AM to 5 PM EST, or by ticket at any time. A false drawer full light alone is rarely a reason to replace the whole robot, since a laser board or base swap fixes the hardware cases.

Questions people ask

Why does my Litter-Robot 4 say the drawer is full when it is empty?

Usually a bag that is not flat, a dark bag, dusty curtain sensors, fur in the seal strips or a clump at the waste port. Flatten a white liner, clean the bezel and press Reset and Cycle.

How many cycles does the Litter-Robot 4 run after the drawer is full?

Whisker says it cycles two more times after detecting a full drawer, then stops until you empty it.

Can I use black bags in the Litter-Robot 4?

Whisker says dark bags can cause inaccurate readings, especially in an empty drawer. White bags or Whisker's liners work best.

How do I recalibrate the Litter-Robot 4 drawer sensor?

Put the gray card or white paper in the empty drawer, turn the unit off but keep it plugged in, wait 5 seconds and press Connect, Reset, Connect, Empty, Cycle within 5 seconds of each other.

Does the Litter-Robot 4 drawer full sensor need replacing?

Only if cleaning, a firmware update and recalibration all fail. Whisker then points to the laser board or the base.
