Litter-Robot 4 won't connect to WiFi: causes and fixes
A Litter-Robot 4 that won't connect to WiFi is usually on a 5 GHz or mesh network, blocked by a router setting, or has lost its saved network. Whisker's fix is to check the Connect light, power cycle the unit, then reconnect it on a 2.4 GHz network.
Researched by Riley Hart · updated Oct 27, 2026 · How we research
The Litter-Robot 4 only joins 2.4 GHz networks, so mesh routers and combined 5 GHz networks cause most failures. A blinking blue Connect light means it is trying to reach WiFi, blinking yellow means it is in onboarding mode or forgot its network, and solid white means WiFi is off. The quickest fix is to unplug the unit for 15 seconds, power it on, then short press Connect to turn WiFi off, wait 30 seconds and short press it again. If it still won't connect, use Update Network in the Whisker app on a 2.4 GHz network.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Blinking blue Connect light | Robot is trying to reach WiFi and is offline | Unplug for 15 seconds, power on and wait about 30 seconds. Then short press Connect to turn WiFi off, wait 30 seconds and short press it again. |
| Blinking yellow Connect light | Onboarding mode, or the robot forgot its saved network | Finish setup in the Whisker app, or open the robot, tap Settings, then Update Network. |
| Solid white Connect light | WiFi is turned off | Short press Connect for about one second and wait for solid blue. |
| Blue with red flashing WiFi light | Robot cannot reach the router | Confirm the router is on and working, then power cycle the robot. |
| Blue with white flashing WiFi light | Defective WiFi chip | Whisker says the base needs replacing. |
| Setup fails on a mesh or 5 GHz network | The robot only joins 2.4 GHz networks | Turn off the 5 GHz band for setup, or make a 2.4 GHz only guest network and put your phone on it too. |
| Connects, then drops offline again | Band steering on a mesh router moves the robot between bands | Create a dedicated 2.4 GHz guest network and reconnect the robot to it. |
| Still offline after a reconnect | Router blocks the robot: QoS, MiMo, IoT approval or firewall ports | Disable QoS and MiMo, approve the robot as an IoT device, and keep ports 443 and 8443 open. |
| App says the WiFi password is invalid | Wrong network name or password, which are case sensitive | Retype both without extra spaces, reboot the router for 30 seconds, turn off any VPN, then Hard Reset and retry. |
| App says it failed to establish a secure session | Saved pairing data is bad | Factory Reset: hold Reset and Empty together for 3 seconds, then onboard again. |
| App says the serial number is already in use | Robot is still claimed on another account, often a second hand unit | Sign in to the right account; for a second hand robot, submit a Whisker support request. |

Step by step checks, in order
Whisker's not connecting guide starts with the Connect light next to the Connect button, because its color tells you which step you need. Work through these in order. The early steps are free and fix most cases.
- Make sure the unit is plugged in and the Whisker app is up to date.
- Press Power to turn the unit off, unplug the power supply for 15 seconds, plug it back in and press Power. The light bar flashes red, green and blue, and the Connect light should turn solid blue within about 30 seconds.
- If the Connect light still blinks blue, short press Connect for about one second. It turns solid white, which means WiFi is off. Wait 30 seconds, then short press Connect again.
- Do not hold Connect too long. If the light starts flashing yellow, the robot has forgotten its network and you need Update Network in the app.
- In the app, select the robot, tap the settings gear, choose Update Network and enter your 2.4 GHz network name and password.
- Keep the robot near the router during setup and keep your phone within a few feet of it.
- When it works, send a Cycle command from Controls in the app to confirm the robot answers.
Router settings that stop the Litter-Robot 4
If the Connect light keeps blinking blue after a reconnect, Whisker says the unit may not be reaching its servers, and the router often needs a change. The robot needs a 2.4 GHz private home network. Captive portal networks, like hotel or dorm WiFi, and VPNs get in the way.
On a mesh system, turn off the 5 GHz band while you set up, or create a 2.4 GHz only guest network and join it with your phone before onboarding. Turn off QoS and MiMo if your router has them, approve the robot as an IoT device if your router asks for device approval, and make sure ports 443 and 8443 are not blocked. Check your router maker's instructions for where these settings live.
Hard reset and factory reset
A Hard Reset reboots the WiFi without erasing everything. With the unit on, hold Reset and Connect together for 3 seconds, release, wait 15 seconds for the reboot, then onboard again. A Factory Reset goes further: hold Reset and Empty together for 3 seconds, wait for the reboot and set it up from scratch. Whisker suggests the factory reset when the app reports a failed secure session.
If the robot is still offline, close the app, unplug the robot for 15 seconds, disconnect the backup battery if you have one, then restore power and wait for the solid blue Ready light before you reopen the app. For Bluetooth pairing trouble, turn phone Bluetooth off and on, remove the robot from your phone's Bluetooth device list if it was paired before, and reboot the phone if scans keep failing.
When a part needs replacing or support should step in
Most WiFi problems are network problems, not hardware. Two light patterns point to the robot itself. A white flashing WiFi light means a defective WiFi chip, and Whisker says the base needs replacing. A blinking yellow light that stays after Update Network likely means a problem with the unit. Under the WhiskerCare warranty, select replacement parts ship at no cost through your Whisker account.
Contact Whisker at 1.877.250.7729, by live chat (Monday to Friday 9 AM to 9 PM EST, weekends 9 AM to 5 PM EST) or with a support ticket. Have a screenshot of the error, your phone model and system version, your router brand and a list of what you tried. Replacing the whole robot for a WiFi fault rarely makes sense, since a new base or a network change fixes it.

Questions people ask
Does the Litter-Robot 4 work on 5 GHz WiFi?
No. Whisker says it connects only to 2.4 GHz networks. On a mesh router, turn off 5 GHz during setup or make a 2.4 GHz only guest network.
Why does my Litter-Robot 4 keep going offline?
Mesh routers can move devices between bands. Whisker suggests a dedicated 2.4 GHz guest network, then reconnecting the robot with Update Network.
How do I reconnect my Litter-Robot 4 after changing my router?
Open the Whisker app, select the robot, tap the settings gear, choose Update Network and follow the steps with the new network name and password.
What does the yellow blinking light next to Connect mean?
The robot is in onboarding mode and waiting for the app. On a robot that was already set up, it means it lost its WiFi and needs Update Network.
How do I reset the WiFi on a Litter-Robot 4?
Hold Reset and Connect together for 3 seconds for a Hard Reset, then wait 15 seconds. For a Factory Reset, hold Reset and Empty for 3 seconds.
