Polaris robotic pool cleaner error codes and lights

Polaris robotic pool cleaners report faults as numbered codes. The FREEDOM cordless manual lists codes 1 to 8, 10, 12, 14 and 20 to 25, shown with a blinking red status light, and Polaris has its own guide for Error 10 on corded models.

Short answer

As of October 27, 2026, the Polaris FREEDOM owner's manual lists these codes with a blinking red status light: 1 and 4 pump motor (clear the impeller, clean the filter), 2 and 3 traction motor and 5 and 6 drive motor (clear debris, turn the wheels), 7 floating and 8 out of water (clean the filter, restart, shake out air bubbles), 10 communication error, 12 firmware update error, 14 motor block, 20 and 21 battery (battery block must be replaced), 22 and 23 charging too hot or cold, and 25 charging error (clean the charge plates). On corded models, Polaris says Error 10 usually comes down to the floating cable connection at the control box.

Codes and lights from the Polaris FREEDOM Cordless Robotic Cleaner owner's manual (H0748900 Rev B, hosted by a Polaris dealer) and Polaris support articles, checked October 27, 2026. Other models, including the FREEDOM Plus and the corded VRX iQ+, have their own manuals, so check yours for the full list.

How Polaris shows errors

On the cordless FREEDOM, the cleaner has three LEDs: battery, Wi-Fi and operating status. When something goes wrong, the status LED blinks red and the app shows the error number. The charging station has its own LED too: solid green means it has power, solid red means it is charging, and blinking green means the station itself needs replacing.

The battery LED is worth learning. Solid green is fully charged. Blinking green means ready for a full cycle of about 2 hours 30 minutes. Solid orange means not fully charged and it may not finish a floor and wall cycle. Blinking orange means the battery is too low to run. Blinking red means a charging error because the cleaner is too hot.

Corded Polaris robots like the VRX iQ+ use a control box by the pool. Polaris's own support article on Error 10 is written for these cleaners and focuses on the floating cable and its connection to the box.

Motor and pump codes (1 to 6 and 14)

These codes mean a motor is working too hard or cannot turn. The usual cause is debris. For pump codes 1 and 4, the FREEDOM manual says to turn the cleaner off by holding the slider to the left for 20 seconds while it is off the base, then clear hair and debris from the impeller and clean the filter.

For traction codes 2 and 3, drive codes 5 and 6 and motor block code 14, remove debris from around the wheels and tracks and turn the wheels by hand. The manual says a quarter turn for code 14. Things like hair ties, twigs and string wound round an axle are common culprits. If the code returns with everything clear, contact support.

Floating, out of water and Error 10

Codes 7 and 8 mean the cleaner thinks it is floating or out of the water. Clean the filter, restart, then put the cleaner back in and shake it gently under the surface so trapped air escapes. Do not let it run dry. Polaris warns that running out of water can badly damage the motors and may void the warranty.

Error 10 is a communication error. On the FREEDOM it means the board has power but is not answering, which is a support case. On corded cleaners, Polaris's article gives these steps: power the cleaner off and on, check the floating cable is tight on the control box, then look at the connection for corrosion or bent pins. Remove corrosion. Bent pins may need a new part. If it still shows, call Polaris customer service at 800 822 7933 or see your retailer.

Charging and battery codes on the FREEDOM

Codes 22 and 23 mean the station is too hot or too cold to charge, and charging pauses. The manual says 40 to 105 °F is the recommended range, so move the station out of direct sun or a cold garage. Code 25 points at the charge plates: clean them with a cloth and fresh water that is not salt water. Dry the cleaner and contacts before every charge.

A full charge takes about 5 hours. If the battery light is not green after more than 6 hours, clean the contacts. Store the cleaner at 80 to 100 percent charge in a dry place between 50 and 70 °F, and do not leave it in the pool when you are not using it. After 8 days unused it goes into deep sleep. Set it back on the base to wake it.

When a repeat error means a worn part

Codes 20 and 21 are the clearest case. The FREEDOM manual says the battery block must be replaced. If the battery light turns off on the base instead of showing charge, the manual also calls the battery obsolete. A charging station whose own LED blinks green needs replacing too.

Poor climbing is often wear rather than a fault. Polaris lists worn tracks, a dirty filter, pool chemistry and being in floor only mode as reasons a cleaner will not climb walls, and says to replace worn brushes when cleaning gets poor. A filter canister that keeps clogging with fine algae, silt or salt can make the cleaner shut itself down on walls, so scrub the inner mesh with mild soap. On corded robots, corroded or bent pins on the cable connection lead to repeat Error 10, and Polaris says service centers can test the control box, cable and motor block.

When to contact Polaris support or use the warranty

Contact support when a code returns after the steps above, and straight away for code 10 on the FREEDOM and codes 20 and 21. Polaris says to go first to the dealer you bought from, then polarispool.com, then Technical Support at 1 800 822 7933. Fluidra, the parent company, also takes email at [email protected].

The VRX iQ+, FREEDOM Plus and FREEDOM carry a 2 year limited warranty in our data. Keep your receipt and register the cleaner. The FREEDOM manual says freeze damage is not covered, running the cleaner out of water may void the warranty, and the warranty does not cover vinyl liner pattern wear or marks.

Questions people ask

What is Error 10 on a Polaris robotic cleaner?

A communication error. On corded models, power cycle, tighten the floating cable at the control box and check the pins for corrosion or bending. On the FREEDOM, contact support if it stays.

Why is my Polaris FREEDOM blinking red?

A blinking red status LED means an error code; check the number in the app. A blinking red battery LED means a charging error because the cleaner is too hot.

How do I reset a Polaris FREEDOM?

Hold the slider to the left for 20 seconds, then place the cleaner on the charging base.

What does Polaris error 7 or 8 mean?

7 means the cleaner is floating and 8 means it is out of the water. Clean the filter, restart, and shake it gently under water to release trapped air.

Why does my Polaris say the filter is clogged when it looks clean?

Polaris says hair or fine debris has likely jammed the canister propeller. Remove the canister, take off the center piece and propeller, clear the debris and reassemble.

What do Polaris codes 20 and 21 mean?

A battery error. The FREEDOM manual says the battery block must be replaced, so contact your retailer or Polaris support.
