Short answer

None of the 10 boxes we list needs a subscription to clean. The cheapest to run over 3 years are the Neakasa M1 (about $482 including the box) and CATLINK Scooper Young (about $489), which need only bags. The CatGenie A.I. is the one that needs a proprietary cartridge to clean, and the PetSafe SmartSpin's deodorizers add about $540 over 3 years.

Prices and 3 year supply estimates from our robot data, checked October 15, 2026, for one cat at the use rates noted below. Optional extras (Whisker+, OdorTrap packs, extended warranties) are not included. More cats mean more bags, liners and deodorizers.

Subscription vs paid supplies

A subscription is a monthly or yearly fee to unlock features. A paid supply is something the box uses up, like bags, liners, filters or deodorizer. Search results often mix the two, but they hit your budget differently.

On subscriptions, the answer is simple: no box we list stops cleaning without one. Whisker+ is the only paid plan on our list that changes what the box does, and it is optional. Whisker's page says features that came with your device stay free, including SmartScale cat ID and weight tracking.

On supplies, the gap is large. Over 3 years, our estimates run from about $39 for the CATLINK to about $636 for the CatGenie.

Cheapest to run: Neakasa M1 and CATLINK Scooper Young

The Neakasa M1 needs only its waste bags: $19.99 for 30, one bag every 10 to 14 days for one cat, about $52 over 3 years. With the $429.99 box, that is about $482 as of October 15, 2026.

The CATLINK Scooper Young needs proprietary bags at $39.99 for 80, about one every 14 days, so roughly $39 over 3 years. It also runs without an app, using a panel with Auto, Manual and Empty modes. Total about $489.

Both use regular clumping litter, so litter is the same cost as with a manual box.

PETKIT: low bag cost, odor packs add up

PETKIT bags cost $29.99 per 100, so bags alone are about $22 to $23 over 3 years for one cat. Most of the running cost is the odor eliminator.

The PuraMax 2 uses the N50 at $19.99 per 3 piece pack, each piece lasting 30 days, about $240 over 3 years. The Purobot Max Pro 2 uses the N60, which PETKIT says lasts 45 to 60 days per piece, about $120 over 3 years. Neither odor pack is needed for the box to clean.

On the Purobot Max Pro 2, urine pH detection needs PETKIT Urine Monitor Cat Litter, sold separately. We did not capture its price.

Litter-Robot: filters and liners, Whisker+ optional

The Litter-Robot 4 uses carbon filters at $30 per 6 pack, one a month, about $180 over 3 years, plus drawer liners at $25 per 25, about one a week, $156 over 3 years. That puts the 4 at about $1,035 over 3 years including the $699 box.

The Litter-Robot 5 and 5 Pro use the same $156 of liners. Whisker says to replace their carbon filter every 2 to 4 weeks, but we found no US price for it, so their totals exclude filters.

Whisker+ costs $7.99 a month after a 30 day trial, or $79.90 a year, about $240 over 3 years. It adds daily summaries, up to 2 years of history and 30 days of video and events. On the 5 Pro, facial recognition and unlimited live video need it; without it you get 5 minutes of live video a day. Whisker's optional OdorTrap packs would add about $390 over 3 years.

PetSafe SmartSpin: cheap box, costly deodorizer

The SmartSpin is one of the cheapest boxes at $399.99, but PetSafe says each plug in deodorizer lasts 15 days, and a 2 pack costs $14.99. At one pack a month, that is about $540 over 3 years. Add about $47 of bin liners and the 3 year total is about $986.

PetSafe calls the deodorizer an accessory and does not say the box needs it to run. Skipping it cuts the cost but may raise odor.

CatGenie A.I.: the one that needs its own consumable

The CatGenie washes washable granules and flushes waste down a drain, so there are no bags. But it cleans with SaniSolution cartridges. CatGenie says one cartridge covers 120 cycles in timed or manual mode, or about 240 in cat activation mode.

Our estimate is about $312 of cartridges and $324 of granules over 3 years, about $1,105 with the box. CatGenie's FAQ says one granule box lasts a one cat home 5 to 6 months, which would put granule spend lower than our estimate. It also needs a cold water line, a drain and an outlet.

PetSnowy SNOW+: cost not published

The SNOW+ needs proprietary bags (empty about every 2 weeks for one cat) and a fragrance box that lasts up to 30 days, per Cats.com. PetSnowy does not list US prices for either, so we cannot give a 3 year total.

How to keep running costs down

  • Pick a box that uses standard clumping litter rather than proprietary litter or granules.
  • Check whether generic bags fit. The Irish Times noted Litter-Robot 4 bags can be branded or generic.
  • Treat odor packs and deodorizers as optional and add them only if you need them.
  • Budget for more supplies with more cats. Whisker says two cats need about twice as many liners.
