Boston Dynamics Atlas in 2026: factory status, specs, and whether you can buy one

The electric Boston Dynamics Atlas went into production in 2026, but every 2026 unit is committed to Hyundai and Google DeepMind. Boston Dynamics says other customers start in early 2027. It has published no price, and Atlas is an industrial robot, not a home product.

Short answer

No, you cannot buy an Atlas. Boston Dynamics says all 2026 Atlas deployments are fully committed to Hyundai and Google DeepMind, and that it plans to add customers in early 2027. It has not published a price. Atlas is built for factories and warehouses. Its CEO calls home robots a long term goal, not a current product.

Where Atlas stands in October 2026

Boston Dynamics retired its famous hydraulic Atlas in April 2024, more than a decade after it debuted in 2013. It replaced it with a fully electric Atlas meant for real work at Hyundai, which is Boston Dynamics' majority owner.

On January 5, 2026, at CES in Las Vegas, the company showed the production version. It said it would start building it immediately at its Boston headquarters. It said all Atlas deployments for 2026 are already fully committed, with first fleets going to Hyundai's Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) and Google DeepMind.

On September 23, 2026, Just Auto reported that RMAC had opened at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America near Savannah, Georgia. Its first phase is running. Atlas robots are training on logistics jobs such as preparing and sequencing car parts for assembly.

Can you buy an Atlas?

Not as a person, and not yet as most businesses. Boston Dynamics says it plans to add customers in early 2027. It has not published a price on its launch post, and Engadget's CES report gave none either.

Boston Dynamics describes Atlas as an enterprise grade industrial robot. Automate.org reports the first focus is material handling in factories and warehouses, and that the company is starting to work with select customers. There is no consumer order page, waitlist or deposit.

What Atlas can do, according to Boston Dynamics

  • 56 degrees of freedom with fully rotating joints
  • Reach of about 7.5 ft (2.3 m)
  • Lifts up to 110 lb (50 kg), per Boston Dynamics; Automate.org lists a payload of up to 66 lb
  • Height of 6.2 ft, per Automate.org
  • About four hours of battery, which Automate.org says it extends by swapping its own batteries in about three minutes
  • Works from minus 4 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit; Automate.org reports an IP67 water and dust rating
  • Can run on its own, by a teleoperator or from a tablet steering interface, per Engadget
  • Detects people and vehicles and pauses if someone comes within a set radius, per Automate.org

Hyundai's plans for 2027 to 2030

Hyundai's plans are the clearest timeline any humanoid maker has tied to a real factory. They are still plans.

Engadget reports Hyundai plans to use Atlas in its car plants for tasks like parts sequencing in 2028, then component assembly by 2030. Just Auto reports Hyundai plans to deploy 25,000 Atlas robots across Hyundai and Kia plants over the next few years. RMAC is set to move next year into a space about ten times larger.

Boston Dynamics says Hyundai's $26 billion US investment includes a new robotics factory able to make 30,000 robots a year. It gave no opening date. AJC reported the 30,000 a year figure in January 2026 alongside a 2028 start.

Google DeepMind's role

Google DeepMind is one of the first two Atlas customers. Engadget reports DeepMind is getting Atlas to run its Gemini Robotics AI models. Automate.org says that research is set to start in the coming months. This matters for homes because general purpose AI, not just better legs, is what a household robot needs.

What Atlas means for home robots

Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter describes robots that help in homes as a long term goal. Nothing in the company's 2026 plans points to a home product.

Factories come first for good reasons. A car plant has the same parts in the same places every day, trained staff, and safety zones. A home has stairs, pets, kids and clutter. Atlas is also a 6.2 ft machine that can lift up to 110 lb, which is far more strength than a home robot needs around children.

If Hyundai hits its 2028 and 2030 targets, that will show humanoids can do steady paid work. Cheaper parts and better AI could then trickle down to home robots. That is a reasonable hope, not a date.

The Boston Dynamics robot you can buy

Boston Dynamics does sell its Spot robot dog to businesses. When it opened sales in 2020, TechCrunch reported a price of $74,500 for the Spot Explorer kit, with terms that require beneficial use. Spot is not sold as a home robot either.
