Dolphin pool robot not climbing walls: causes and fixes

A Dolphin that won't climb walls usually has a clogged filter, debris in the impeller, algae on the walls or water chemistry out of range. Maytronics' fix is to clean the filter and impeller, scrub the walls and bring pH back to 7.0 to 7.8.

Short answer

Maytronics lists four causes in every recent Dolphin manual: a clogged filter, algae on the walls, unsuitable pH and debris in the impeller housing or cover. Clean the filter after every cycle, open the impeller cover and clear it, scrub the walls and keep pH between 7.0 and 7.8. Climbing also weakens in water below 15°C (59°F). If an older robot still slides after all that, owners point to worn brushes or drive tracks.

Step by step checks, in order

Every recent Dolphin manual gives the same answer for a robot that will not climb: clean the filter, check and adjust the chemicals, scrub the walls and remove debris from the impeller. Do the checks in this order, because a dirty filter is the most common cause and costs nothing to fix.

  • Turn off and unplug the power supply before you touch the robot.
  • Open the filter cover, lift out the basket and rinse it with a hose. Do not let the panels dry before you clean them.
  • At least once a month, remove the inner net basket and rinse each ultra fine filter panel, then reassemble them in order. Do not force filters into place.
  • Remove the impeller cover and clear hair, leaves or string from around the impeller.
  • Test the water. Maytronics wants pH 7.0 to 7.8, chlorine no higher than 4 ppm and salt no higher than 5,000 ppm.
  • Brush any algae off the walls before the next run.
  • If the robot has sponge brushes, soak and squeeze them until they are fully wet.

Filters, brushes and water temperature

Dolphin robots come with two filter levels. The coarse net or spring filter is for large debris and the start of the season. The ultra fine panels are for everyday use and are the factory default. A fine filter in a pool full of leaves clogs quickly and kills suction, which is what holds the robot on the wall.

Brushes matter for grip. Maytronics says the combined brush is the all surface climbing brush and the Wonder brush is for smooth ceramics, and the older Supreme manual says to replace brushes that are worn or wrong for your surface. Maytronics also notes that climbing performance may drop below 15°C (59°F), so weak climbing early or late in the season is not always a fault. Do not run the robot after adding liquid flocculant or clarifier, which Maytronics says clogs and damages the filters.

Climbing settings on some models

Some Dolphins let you turn wall climbing off. On older models with a remote control unit, the Supreme manual lists a remote not set for climbing as a cause, and an older Maytronics troubleshooting manual says to reprogram the remote for climbing. Check your app or remote before you take the robot apart.

The same older manual lists a robot that climbs too high, letting air into the impeller tube, as a separate problem. Maytronics' answer there is to consult your dealer, which may suggest a weight or handle change.

When to replace a part, contact support or replace the robot

If climbing is still weak after a clean filter, a clear impeller and balanced water, the parts to look at are the filter panels, the brushes and the drive tracks. On the Trouble Free Pool forum, owners of a Dolphin Z5 that lost its climb after a few years suggested worn drive tracks and brushes; that is an owner report, not a Maytronics instruction. A motor unit that has lost power is a dealer or warranty repair.

Maytronics lists North America customer support at 1 888 365 7446 ext. 1002 and [email protected]. Warranty length depends on the model, so have the model and serial number ready. On an older robot out of warranty that needs tracks, brushes and a motor unit together, compare the repair quote with the price of a new robot before you pay for parts.

Why did my Dolphin stop climbing walls?

Maytronics lists a clogged filter, algae on the walls, unsuitable pH and debris in the impeller housing. Clean the filter and impeller first, then check the water.

What pH does a Dolphin need to climb walls?

Recent Maytronics manuals give pH 7.0 to 7.8, chlorine up to 4 ppm and salt up to 5,000 ppm.

Does cold water stop a Dolphin from climbing?

It can. Maytronics says climbing performance may be affected below 15°C (59°F).

Which Dolphin brush is best for climbing?

Maytronics calls the combined brush the all surface climbing brush and recommends the Wonder brush for smooth ceramic tile. Sponge brushes must be soaked before use.

Can worn tracks stop a Dolphin climbing?

Owners on Trouble Free Pool report worn drive tracks and brushes on robots a few years old. Maytronics' own steps start with the filter, impeller and water.
