Dolphin pool robot not moving: causes and fixes

A Dolphin that won't move is usually not getting power, has a loose floating cable, or has debris jammed in the impeller, tracks or wheels. Maytronics' fix is to check the outlet and GFCI, seat both cables and clear the impeller, tracks and wheels with the power unplugged.

Short answer

Look at the power supply first. No light means no power reaching it: check the outlet, the switch, the black power cable and the GFCI, then turn it off for 30 seconds and back on. A steady red light means the blue floating cable is loose, something is jammed in the impeller, tracks or wheels, or the robot is out of the water. A flashing green light just means it is waiting for its timer.

Step by step checks, in order

Dolphin robots get power through a power supply on the deck and a blue floating cable. Most do not show error codes, so the light on the power supply is your guide. Work from the outlet to the robot.

  • Check the outlet with another device and reset the GFCI. Maytronics says to use a GFCI protected outlet and no extension cord.
  • Make sure the power supply is switched on and the black power cable is pushed fully in.
  • Turn the supply off, wait 30 seconds and turn it on again.
  • Check the blue floating cable is firmly connected to the power supply.
  • Make sure the robot is fully underwater before you switch on. Maytronics says not to plug in the supply before the cleaner is in the water.
  • If the light is steady red, unplug the supply, open the impeller cover and remove any debris, then check that nothing blocks the tracks or wheels.
  • If the light flashes green, the robot is waiting for its delayed start or weekly timer and is not broken.

Clearing the impeller, tracks and wheels

A jam stops the drive and turns the power supply light red. Unplug first. Remove the impeller cover, clean around the impeller housing and refit it with a hand Phillips screwdriver; Maytronics says not to use an electric screwdriver. Then look at the tracks and wheels for string, hair or leaves.

On the Trouble Free Pool forum, a Dolphin representative told an owner whose robot would not start to flip it over with the power unplugged and turn the brushes and tracks by hand in both directions. They should turn with little resistance. Clicking or strong resistance points to debris in the tracks or brushes. The same reply says to check the plastic cover above the impeller and the side grilles for blockages and to make sure the cover is seated.

When the motor or power supply is the problem

The older Supreme manual lists a blocked impeller, a blocked drive system or a power supply problem when the motor does not work. If the power source checks out, Maytronics says to contact your distributor.

Owners on Trouble Free Pool describe two patterns. One robot that ran only 15 to 20 minutes had a hot power box, and Maytronics sent a new power box and cable that fixed it. Another owner suggested lifting the robot out, removing the filter basket and watching the startup self test: if the impeller speeds or track movement fail, the motor unit is likely failing. These are owner reports, not Maytronics instructions.

Contact support or replace the robot

Maytronics lists North America customer support at 1 888 365 7446 ext. 1002 and [email protected]. Have the model and serial number ready. The parts most often named for a robot that will not move are the power supply, the floating cable, the drive tracks, wheels and the motor unit.

Several owners on Trouble Free Pool say they expect roughly 3 to 5 years from a robot and that an older unit needing a motor, tracks and wheels may not be worth repairing. If your robot is out of warranty and the dealer quotes a motor unit, compare that with a new robot before you decide.

Questions people ask

Why is my Dolphin power supply on but the robot not moving?

Maytronics lists a loose blue floating cable, debris in the impeller, tracks or wheels, and the robot being out of the water. The power supply usually shows a steady red light.

What does a flashing green light on a Dolphin power supply mean?

It is waiting for its next run on a delayed start or weekly timer. Nothing is wrong.

Does a Dolphin have a reset button?

Maytronics' manuals tell you to turn the power supply off, wait 30 seconds and turn it back on, rather than pressing a reset button.

Why does my Dolphin run for a few minutes and then stop?

Check the impeller and tracks for debris first. Owners on Trouble Free Pool report hot, failing power boxes and failing motor units as later causes.

Can I plug in my Dolphin before it is in the pool?

No. Maytronics says not to plug in the power supply before the cleaner is in the water.
