How to build a robot with your kid this weekend

Updated 2026-10-18

You do not need to know anything about electronics to build a robot with your kid. You need the right kit, a clear table and about 3 hours. Here is the plan we give every family.

Find my kit in 1 minute →

1. Pick a kit you can finish

Choose a kit that comes in one box, needs no soldering and works with an app after building. Check the maker's age rating and pick one you will enjoy too. Our kit finder picks one in 1 minute.

2. Set up before you start

Clear a big table with good light. Sort the screws and nuts into small bowls or a muffin tin. Charge the battery if the kit lets you. Keep the paper guide open next to you.

3. Split the jobs

Kids love the big moments: pressing parts together, plugging in wires, switching it on. Adults are best at tiny screws and reading the steps out loud. Swap jobs every few steps.

4. One step at a time, then check

Do one small action, then check it worked before moving on. Most problems come from a plug that is not pushed in all the way or a part facing the wrong way. Our guides show what you should see after every step.

5. Plan a first mission

The moment it moves is the best part. Have a mission ready: drive it into another room using only the camera, or race it through a pillow course. Take a photo for the family.
