Short answer

Buy the Casio Moflin ($429) if you want a calm pet to hold: it needs no subscription, runs about 5 hours a charge and Casio says it does not record speech. Buy the KEYi Loona Petbot ($429, was $529) for kids who want a pet that drives around, plays games and talks, but its AI runs on KEYi's cloud. Buy Ropet KAMOMO Pro ($279.99, was $349) for a warm, furry desk pet that does most things offline. Buy Eilik ($139.99) as a cheap desk pet. Pick Sony aibo ($3,199.99) only if you want a true robot dog and can pay about $300 a year for cloud after year 3.

Prices from maker stores and the reviews listed below, checked October 25, 2026, before tax and shipping. Prices and sales change often. We did not test these robots ourselves; findings come from the reviewers cited.

How we picked

A robot pet is a robot built to keep you company, not to clean or guard. We looked at what each one does, what it costs to own, how long it runs per charge and how much it depends on the maker's cloud. We weighed findings from independent reviewers and the maker's own specs, and we say which is which.

Three questions sort most buyers fast. Do you want to hold it, or watch it move around? Is it for a child, an adult or an older parent? And are you fine with a robot that needs the internet and a company that stays in business?

Best overall: Casio Moflin ($429)

Moflin is a soft, furry pet about the size of a guinea pig. Casio lists it at $429 and sells it direct at casio.com/us/moflin. A pink color arrived in the US on October 1, 2026. It weighs about 9.2 ounces, runs up to 5 hours a charge and recharges in about 3.5 hours on its bed.

It reacts to petting, holding and your voice, and Casio says its personality grows over the first 50 days. The free MofLife app shows its mood. Casio says Moflin does not understand or record speech and stores voice features as data that cannot identify you on the device. We found no subscription.

TechCrunch lived with one for a month. The reviewer found its AI not much smarter than a Furby, but said it is hard to harm and could suit young kids and memory care. Its deep sleep mode stops all movement and sound. If you want a pet that talks back, this is the wrong pick.

Best for families: KEYi Loona Petbot ($429)

Loona drives around the floor on wheels, follows people, plays games and chats by voice. KEYi's store listed the Loona Petbot Premium at $429, down from $529, with a Space Edition at $699. RoboZaps priced it at $499 in July 2026 and called families with kids its best fit.

The catch is the cloud. RoboZaps says its AI runs on KEYi's servers, and KEYi says GPT chat is free "for the moment." It also has a camera you can view through the app. KEYi lists 2 to 4 hours per charge, and RoboZaps says battery life and connection drops are common complaints. TechCrunch, in an early 2023 review, found face and voice recognition hit or miss and the ears fragile. KEYi says 2026 units have stronger joints.

Best cuddly pick under $300: Ropet KAMOMO Pro ($279.99)

Ropet is a warm, furry desk pet with big screen eyes and a camera in its nose. Ropet's own store listed the KAMOMO Pro at $279.99, down from $349, with a charging base included. Ropet lists about 2.5 to 3.5 hours per charge, and it can stay plugged in while you play.

Ropet says recognition, behaviors and personality growth work offline, while chat, diary and photo sketch features use the cloud. Robots Around The House praised its eye contact, fur and gesture controls, but found it did not respond to its name. Robot Review Desk scored it 6.7 out of 10 and flagged short battery life and a young, single product maker. It ships to the US mainland only.

Best desk pets: Emo ($279) and Eilik ($139.99)

Living AI's Emo is a tiny robot that walks around your desk, dances and answers questions. LivingAI lists it at $279, or $369 for Emo Go Home with a Home Station so it can dock itself. Anton Robots recommends the Go Home version, lists about 2.5 hours of play per charge and notes it needs 2.4 GHz WiFi and the internet for its smarter features.

Eilik is the budget pick. Anton Robots lists it at $139.99 on Energize Lab's store, and Creative Bloq saw the same price on Amazon. It does not roam, but it reacts to touch, plays games and has a timer. Robot Review Desk notes it works with no app, account or subscription. For voice chat and a camera you need the separate AI Station, listed at $99.

Best robot dogs: aibo, Bittle X and Go2

Sony aibo is the most lifelike robot dog you can buy. RoboZaps lists it at $3,199.99 with a three year AI Cloud Plan, then about $300 a year. It plays about 2 hours a charge and walks back to its charger. Sony stopped Japan sales in June 2026 once stock runs out but says support and cloud plans will continue; it has not set a US end date.

Petoi Bittle X is a coding robot dog for kids 10 and up, from $319 as a kit. It walks about an hour per charge. The Unitree Go2 starts at $1,600 direct but weighs about 33 lb and is a robotics platform, not a pet to cuddle. Our robot dog guide covers both in more detail.

Think twice: Vector 2.0

Vector 2.0 is a palm sized robot that roams your desk. Digital Dream Labs' anki.bot store listed a new black unit at $249.99 with open box units from $189.99. Voice commands need a subscription of $11.99 a month or $99.99 a year after a 28 day trial.

Company risk is the bigger worry. Anki, the first maker, collapsed in 2019. In 2024 Pennsylvania's attorney general sued Digital Dream Labs, saying about 14,000 orders placed from 2020 to 2024, worth over $4 million, were mostly not filled. Robot Review Desk notes owners can run a community server called Wire Pod to avoid the cloud, but that takes some tinkering.

Catches to check before you buy

  • Cloud: Loona, Emo's smart features and Vector need the maker's servers. If the company stops, features can stop too.
  • Subscriptions: Vector needs $99.99 a year for voice and aibo about $300 a year after year 3. Moflin, Ropet, Eilik and Loona list none today.
  • Cameras: Loona, Ropet, Emo, Vector and aibo have cameras. Moflin has none. Check privacy settings if it will sit in a bedroom.
  • Battery: most last 2 to 5 hours. Buy a model with a dock, like Emo Go Home, if you do not want to remember to charge it.
  • Shipping: Ropet does not ship to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico, and LivingAI says Emo orders ship in about 2 weeks.
