Robot mower vs lawn service: what 3 years really costs

Robot mower vs lawn service comes down to lawn size and what else you need done. On HomeGuide's prices, 3 years of weekly mowing costs $3,375 to $6,825 for a quarter acre, while a matching robot costs about $1,235 all in.

Short answer

A robot mower is cheaper than a weekly mowing service at every lawn size from 1/8 acre to 1 acre, usually by half or more over 3 years. HomeGuide puts recurring mowing at $30 to $85 a visit and a quarter acre season contract at $900 to $2,000. A service still wins if you need edging, leaf removal, aeration or fertilizing, or if your lawn is over an acre or steeper than robots handle.

Per visit prices are HomeGuide's weekly rates by yard size; the season total multiplies them by HomeGuide's 25 to 35 visits per season. Robot prices are maker store prices as of October 15, 2026. Robot 3 year totals add blades and data plans from our ownership data, which assumes year round mowing; optional discs and batteries are not included.

What a lawn service costs in the US

Price guides do not agree, so here is the spread. HomeGuide puts recurring mowing for a 1/8 to 1/4 acre lawn at $30 to $85 a visit, with a national average of $50, and one time visits at $50 to $100. LawnStarter, updated October 5, 2026, puts a visit at $42 to $68. Forbes Home and Bob Vila quote national averages of $125 and $124 a visit, with ranges of $40 to $200 and $48 to $206.

Per season, HomeGuide says annual mowing packages usually include 25 to 35 visits, and prices a quarter acre contract at $900 to $2,000 a year. Full service lawn care, which adds maintenance beyond mowing, runs $2,000 to $4,000 a year on HomeGuide's numbers.

Size matters less than you might think. HomeGuide's weekly price rises from $30 to $40 a visit at 1/8 acre to $60 to $100 at 1 acre, so the per acre price falls as lawns get bigger.

What a robot mower costs over 3 years

The robot cost is mostly the purchase. Over 3 years, our ownership data adds about $186 for the Navimow i2 AWD models (blades plus $32.90 a year for 4G data after year one), about $130 in blades for the Husqvarna 410 iQ, about $354 for the Navimow X430, and about $390 in blades for the Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO. Those figures assume the robot mows all year; in a 7 month season you would use fewer blades.

Charging is cheap. LawnStarter says recharging costs only a few cents a session. Warranties run 3 years on the Navimow, Mammotion, Mova and Airseekers models in our list and 4 years on the Husqvarna 410 iQ in the US and Canada, though Navimow covers its batteries for 2 years.

None of the 12 robots in our list needs a buried boundary wire, so there is no installation bill. The Husqvarna 410 iQ can use one optionally.

Side by side: where each one wins

On cost alone the robot wins at every size in the table. At a quarter acre the Navimow i210 AWD costs about $1,235 over 3 years, less than one season at the top of HomeGuide's range and about the same as one season at the low end. At an acre, the Navimow X430 at about $2,853 costs less than 2 seasons of low end weekly service.

A service wins on scope. HomeGuide lists typical add ons that a robot does not do: edging at $0.50 to $1.00 per linear foot, leaf removal at $100 to $300 a visit, aeration at $75 to $250, fertilizing at $65 to $100 per treatment, and weed control at $50 to $125 per treatment. If you buy those anyway, you can keep them and drop only the mowing.

A service also handles terrain robots struggle with. Ratings in our list run from 30% slope (Worx Landroid Vision Cloud WR320) to 84% (Navimow X430), and Gizmodo saw the Dreame A3 AWD Pro leave ruts and bald spots on damp slopes. A crew with a mower does not have that limit.

What reviewers found about the cut

Bob Vila tested seven wire free mowers on a Florida lawn with thick St. Augustine grass and steep side slopes. The Navimow X430 handled the thick grass and steep side yards best, and the Mova LiDAX Ultra 3000 AWD needed little intervention after mapping. The Worx WR320 lost traction in thick edge grass.

Edges are the gap. Tom's Guide found the Sunseeker S4 left an uncut strip along edges. BGR found the Ecovacs GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO's built in trimmer handled roughly 75 to 90% of manual edging, the closest any model in our list comes to a service's finish.

Who should keep the lawn service

  • Your lawn is over about an acre. The largest model in our list is rated for 1 acre.
  • You already pay for full service lawn care and value the edging, blowing and seasonal work more than the mowing.
  • Your yard is steep, soft or broken into many narrow strips. Bob Vila found the Airseekers Tron SE struggled in narrow sections.
  • You do not want to handle blades, cleaning and winter storage yourself.

Who should switch to a robot

  • You pay for weekly mowing on 1/8 to 1 acre and handle edging yourself or rarely.
  • Your slopes are within the robot's rating, with some margin.
  • You are fine with a hybrid: the robot mows, and you book a service only for aeration, leaves or cleanup a few times a year at HomeGuide's per visit rates.
