Roomba not picking up dirt: causes and fixes

A Roomba that is not picking up dirt usually has a full bin, a clogged filter or hair wrapped around its brushes and bearings. Here are iRobot's fixes for poor pickup, from bin and filter care to suction settings.

Short answer

The usual causes are a full bin dropping hair back on the floor, a clogged filter, and hair wrapped around the rubber brushes and their gray bearings. Empty the bin, tap the filter clean, and clear the brush pegs, bearings and vacuum path. Then set Cleaning Preferences to Automatic or more passes in the app. If pickup is still poor, iRobot says to fit a new filter, then new brushes.

Step by step checks, in order

iRobot's poor pickup guides follow the airflow from the floor to the filter. Do these steps in order.

  • Empty the bin. In homes with shedding pets it fills fast and can drop hair back on the floor.
  • Remove the filter from the bin and tap it against the trash to shake out dust. iRobot says filters are not made to be washed or get wet.
  • Rinse the bin by hand in warm water if it is dirty and let it dry fully. It is not dishwasher safe.
  • Open the cleaning head door with the tab on the right of the brushes and lift the brushes out.
  • Clear hair from the square and hex pegs at the brush ends, and from on and under the gray bearings.
  • Check the vacuum path behind the brushes is clear, then refit the brushes so the peg shapes match the cleaning head.
  • Run a test job.

Change the cleaning settings

Settings matter as much as cleaning. In the iRobot HOME app, set Cleaning Preferences to Automatic so the robot does two or more passes in small rooms. For pets or deep cleans, iRobot suggests two passes. On s9 and 900 series robots, pick a higher power setting or Performance Mode. Expect shorter battery life at maximum suction.

iRobot also says to run the robot often, at least five times a week if you clean all rooms, so dirt and long hair do not build up. It calls this floor conditioning: pickup gets more even after a few regular runs.

When to replace a part

Fit a new filter first. iRobot's 900 series guide says to install a new, clean filter if cleaning does not help. If pickup is still poor, replace the multi surface rubber brushes, and on s9 robots the cleaning head module if it is damaged. On j series robots, Error 2 that returns with clean brushes is iRobot's sign the brushes need replacing. Buy filters, brushes and cleaning heads from the iRobot Store or an authorized retailer.

When to contact iRobot support or use the warranty

If pickup is still poor after a new filter and clean brushes, iRobot says to contact Customer Care. Do the same if Error 2 stays even with the brushes removed, which points to the brush motor rather than the brushes. Have the robot, its serial number and proof of purchase ready.

When a new robot makes more sense

Older bristle brush Roombas and models without a self emptying dock struggle in heavy shedding homes because the bin fills mid run. If you are emptying the bin during every job, a model with a self emptying dock and rubber brushes may suit you better. See our robot vacuum rankings and pet hair picks.

Questions people ask

Why is my Roomba leaving dirt behind?

Usually a full bin, a clogged filter or hair on the brushes and bearings. Empty the bin, tap the filter clean, clear the brushes and run it again with two passes.

Can I wash my Roomba filter?

No. iRobot says filters are not designed to be washed or get wet. Tap them clean, and replace them when they stay clogged.

How often should I clean Roomba brushes?

iRobot says to inspect the rubber brushes after every cleaning cycle on e, i and j series, and clean them at least once a week.

Why does my Roomba pick up less on carpet?

Low power settings and one pass leave more behind on carpet. Choose a higher power setting or Automatic passes in the app.

Does running Roomba more often help?

Yes. iRobot recommends at least five runs a week when cleaning all rooms so debris and hair do not build up.
