Can robot lawn mowers work in the rain?

Can robot lawn mowers work in the rain? They can survive it, since all the mowers we list are rated for outdoor water, but most makers set them to stop and dock when rain starts because wet grass cuts badly and causes wheel slip.

Short answer

Yes, robot mowers are built to handle rain, with ratings from IPX5 to IP66, and Husqvarna says its Automower can mow in rain. But most brands pause and return to the dock when they sense or forecast rain, then wait out a delay (3 hours by default on Ecovacs GOAT, 180 minutes on Worx Landroid Vision) before mowing again. Leave that setting on: makers say wet grass clumps, cuts unevenly and makes the mower more likely to slip or get stuck.

What the IP rating actually means for rain

An IP rating describes how well the shell keeps water out, and a higher second digit means stronger water resistance. On our list the Husqvarna 410 iQ is IPX5, the Mammotion LUBA 3, Sunseeker S4 and Airseekers Tron SE are IPX6, and the Navimow i2 AWD and X430 are IP66. Dreame says its IPX6 A3 AWD can be washed directly, body and chassis.

Makers are clear that a rating is not a promise of good mowing in the rain. Mammotion writes that you should not assume an IP rating means the mower is intended to mow continuously in rain, and that it does not guarantee effective mowing on saturated soil or slippery slopes. Husqvarna says its Automower can handle rain, but your lawn will look better if it is not cut during heavy rain.

Extreme weather is a different case. Tom's Guide reported that after a storm dropped two inches of rain in an hour, its IPX6 Sunseeker S4 would not turn on until the reviewer removed the battery and let it dry for a day. The reviewer advised bringing it inside when heavy rain is expected.

Rain sensors vs forecast based rain delay

Mowers detect rain in two ways. A physical rain sensor on the body notices water and sends the mower home. A forecast check uses your location's weather data to skip or pause a session before rain arrives. Some mowers use both.

Segway's New Zealand blog says the Navimow X4 and H2 use a capacitive rain sensor plus online weather sync, and docks mid session if rain arrives. It says the older resistive sensor design used on the H1 could corrode over time. The i2 AWD monitors forecasts and pauses and heads back to its dock if rain starts, per Navimow.

Husqvarna's Rain Guard is forecast only. It parks the mower when rain, showers or heavy rain is forecast and resumes at the next full hour after conditions clear. Husqvarna notes parking may lag the actual rain, since it depends on when the app syncs with the weather service.

Ecovacs uses a physical sensor on the GOAT. Its support page calls the sensor highly sensitive, able to pick up ambient humidity, which is why the mower may not restart the moment rain stops.

How to set rain delay on your mower

  • Navimow: turn on weather adaptation in the app. Segway says the rain delay timer is adjustable up to 12 hours on sensor equipped models.
  • Ecovacs GOAT: rain protection is on by default and turns off 3 hours after rain stops. You can change the delay in the app. If a new delay does not seem to apply, Ecovacs says turn rain protection off and on again.
  • Husqvarna: in the Automower Connect app go to More, Smart Home, Automower Smart Routines, then turn on Rain Guard. It needs a Wi-Fi or cellular model or a Connect kit.
  • Worx Landroid Vision: open Rain delay, set it to On, choose a duration and tap Save. The default is 180 minutes, counted from when the sensor dries.
  • Mammotion, Dreame, Mova, Sunseeker and Airseekers: delay ranges are not published on the pages we checked. Look under weather or rain settings in the app and check your manual.

Why makers say not to mow wet grass

Clumping. Navimow and Mammotion both say wet clippings stick together, build up around the cutting disc and can clog it. Mammotion adds that wet blades of grass bend and cling, which leaves ragged tips and uneven cuts.

Traction. Navimow says rain, watering and waterlogged spots reduce grip and pack clippings into tire treads. Mammotion says soft ground can cause wheel slip, wheel marks and trouble holding a planned path. Ecovacs' stuck mower FAQ says wet lawns are likely to trap the GOAT and suggests enabling the rain sensor and a delay.

Soil. Navimow says wet soil becomes prone to compaction under a mower's weight.

How long to wait. Mammotion says there is no universal number of hours and that heavy rain needs longer drying. Its checklist: no standing water, grass not heavily coated, soil firm underfoot, and the mower keeps traction without leaving tracks. For manual mowing, Navimow suggests 4 to 6 hours after a drizzle and at least 24 hours after heavy rain. Navimow also suggests late morning mowing to avoid dew.

Rain and the charging station

The dock gets wet too. A garage or cover keeps rain off the charging contacts, which Sunseeker links to more reliable docking. Husqvarna says any cover must let water drain and keep its sides open for ventilation. Our garage guide covers official options and clearance rules. For freezing weather, see our winter storage guide instead: frost and ice are a separate problem from rain.

Troubleshooting rain sensor problems

  • Mower will not return in rain: check that rain protection is enabled in the app, then clean dust off the sensor (Ecovacs).
  • Rain mode triggers with no rain: moisture or residue on the sensor terminals can cause it. Ecovacs suggests wiping gently with a cloth or fine sandpaper.
  • Mower sits idle long after rain: the delay timer may be set high, or a forecast based mode is still reading rain. Lower the delay or turn off rain protection to mow sooner.
  • Mower keeps getting stuck after rain: see our stuck mower fix guide and lengthen the rain delay.

Questions people ask

Can I leave my robot mower out in the rain?

Yes. All the mowers we list carry an outdoor water rating from IPX5 to IP66, and most dock themselves when rain starts. In a severe storm, Tom's Guide found its Sunseeker S4 needed a day to dry out, so bringing it in before heavy rain is a sensible precaution.

Do robot lawn mowers have rain sensors?

Many do. Ecovacs GOAT, Worx Landroid Vision, Navimow X4 series and Mammotion mowers have rain sensors per their makers. Husqvarna's Rain Guard and the Navimow i2 AWD use weather forecasts instead.

How long does a robot mower wait after rain?

It depends on the setting. Ecovacs GOAT defaults to 3 hours after rain stops, Worx Landroid Vision to 180 minutes after the sensor dries, Navimow allows up to 12 hours on sensor models, and Husqvarna Rain Guard resumes at the next full hour after the forecast clears.

Is it bad for a robot mower to cut wet grass?

Makers advise against it. Wet clippings clump and clog the disc, cuts come out ragged, and the wheels slip or sink on soft ground. Ecovacs says wet lawns are likely to trap the GOAT.

Why does my mower not mow even though it stopped raining?

The rain delay is still counting, the sensor is still damp, or a forecast based mode expects more rain. Ecovacs notes its sensor is sensitive enough to detect humidity. Lower the delay or turn rain protection off if you need to mow sooner.
