Robot mower keeps getting stuck: causes and fixes

If your robot mower keeps getting stuck, the cause is almost always one of six things: slopes past its rating, wet grass, holes, tall grass, obstacles or a map drawn too tight. Here is what each maker's support pages say to do.

Short answer

Find where it stops, then match the spot to a cause. Fill holes and ruts, cut grass below your model's limit (under 10 cm for Ecovacs GOAT), clean the wheels and underside, mow only when the lawn is dry, and leave a 4 to 6 inch buffer around obstacles and drop offs in the map. If one spot keeps trapping it, make it a no go zone.

Causes and fixes, in order of how often makers mention them

  • Holes, ruts and bumps. Navimow says small ruts, divots and holes stop mowers, and front casters get caught most often. Ecovacs says check where it got stuck for small holes and fill them. Fix: fill and top dress low spots.
  • Wet or slippery grass. Navimow says rain, watering and clippings packed into tire treads cut grip. Ecovacs says wet lawns are likely to trap the GOAT. Fix: mow when dry, avoid right after watering, mow late morning to skip dew, and turn on the rain sensor and delay.
  • Slopes past the rating. Navimow says steeper ground than the mower's rating traps it. Husqvarna's 410 iQ allows 45% inside the area but only 15% at the boundary. Fix: compare your steepest spot with the table above and fence off anything steeper.
  • Grass too tall. Husqvarna lists too long grass as a Trapped cause and gives limits by model, up to 10 cm (3.9 in) on most larger Automowers. Ecovacs says cut the lawn below 10 cm with a regular mower first. Fix: do one manual cut before the robot takes over.
  • Obstacles and low clearance. Husqvarna names outdoor furniture and narrow passages; Navimow names hanging branches, towels, trampolines and tables; Ecovacs lists leaves, stones, toys, fruit and loose wires. Fix: clear the lawn and map permanent objects as no go zones.
  • Debris under the mower. Worx says twigs and branches lodged under the Landroid Vision cause wheel skid, and its Mower trapped message means something blocks a wheel. Husqvarna says grass chunks can stop the blade disc. Fix: switch off, turn it over and clean wheels, treads and the disc.
  • Map drawn too tight. Navimow says boundaries drawn close to drop offs leave no room for position drift and recommends a 4 to 6 inch buffer around non mowing areas and obstacles. Husqvarna says widen work areas or stay out zones in the app, or move the boundary wire if the gap is too small.
  • Lost signal or dirty camera. Navimow says tree canopy, narrow passages and walls near tall buildings can block satellites, and a dirty lens can stop vision navigation. Fix: trim branches, reposition the antenna, wipe the camera before each run.

When one spot keeps catching it

All three of Husqvarna, Ecovacs and Navimow land on the same answer: isolate it. Husqvarna's example is the area under a children's trampoline; make it a stay out zone, and expand the zone if the mower still collides. Ecovacs suggests marking the spot as a No Entry zone, then using manual mode in the app to trim it. If the stuck spot is near the charging station, check that the dock has the clear space its maker asks for; our garage guide lists each brand's numbers.

When to call support

If the mower gets stuck on flat, dry, short grass with nothing underneath it, the problem may be a wheel motor or sensor rather than the lawn. Husqvarna directs owners to a dealer if the Trapped error continues. Check warranty terms on the robot's page before paying for a repair.

Questions people ask

Why does my robot mower keep getting stuck in the same spot?

Usually a hole, a slope past its rating, a low object like a trampoline, or a boundary drawn too close to an edge. Fill the hole or make the spot a no go zone; Husqvarna and Ecovacs both recommend isolating repeat spots.

Why do my robot mower's wheels keep slipping?

Wet grass, clippings packed in the treads, or debris under the mower. Navimow says clean the wheels and mow only when the grass is dry; Worx says remove twigs and branches lodged underneath.

Can tall grass make a robot mower get stuck?

Yes. Husqvarna lists grass that is too long as a Trapped cause, and Ecovacs says to cut the lawn below 10 cm before the GOAT mows.

Will an AWD mower stop getting stuck on hills?

It helps on slopes. AWD models on our list are rated for 45% to 84% slopes, while the two wheel drive Worx WR320 is rated for 30%. AWD does not fix holes, wet grass or a tight map.
