Best robot vacuum for stairs and multi level homes

No robot vacuum on sale in the US climbs stairs, so a two story home needs one robot you carry or one per floor. The Roborock Q10 S5+ ($329.99) is our pick: it stores up to 4 maps and removed 96% of embedded sand from carpet.

Researched by Riley Hart · updated Oct 28, 2026 · How we research

Short answer

As of October 28, 2026, no robot vacuum sold in the US can climb a staircase, so plan on carrying one robot between floors or buying one per floor. The Roborock Q10 S5+ ($329.99) is the best choice for most multi level homes: it stores up to 4 maps, Vacuum Wars measured 96% embedded sand removal from carpet, and two cost $659.98. The best budget pick is the TP-Link Tapo RV30 Max Plus ($249.99), which also stores 4 floor maps. For split levels and raised sills, the Dreame X50 Ultra ($999.99) is rated for 42 mm single steps and 60 mm two tier steps. Skip the Roomba 105 Vac for big homes, since Vacuum Wars estimated only about 630 sq ft per charge.

Can a robot vacuum go up stairs?

Not one you can buy in the US today. Dreame showed a stair climbing concept called the Cyber X, and Notebookcheck reported a price of €1,199 with sales not expected until September 2026, but we have not seen it offered in the US and it is not on our list.

Robot vacuums use downward cliff sensors to stop at the top of a staircase. Eufy explains that these sensors bounce infrared light off the floor and turn the robot away when the signal drops. That keeps the robot from falling, but it also means the robot will never clean the stairs themselves.

How we ranked them

In a multi level home you have two choices: carry one robot between floors, or buy a robot for each floor. Either way, the robot must remember a map for every floor so room names, no go zones and schedules still work when you put it down upstairs.

We ranked robot vacuums on our list by how many floor maps they store, how well they climb the raised sills found in split level homes, how much floor they cover per charge, cleaning results from Vacuum Wars and other named reviewers, and price, because a cheap robot makes the two robot plan affordable. We did not run our own trials.

Best overall: Roborock Q10 S5+ ($329.99)

The Q10 S5+ stores up to 4 maps, so one robot can learn a basement, main floor and upstairs. It cleans very well for the money. Vacuum Wars measured 96% embedded sand removal and 96% pet hair pickup with no hair wrap, and estimated about 1,243 sq ft per charge.

The price is the bigger reason it suits multi level homes. Two Q10 S5+ robots cost $659.98, which is less than most single flagship robots, and each floor gets its own self emptying dock with a 2.7 L bag rated for up to 7 weeks. That beats carrying a robot up and down and emptying its small bin by hand upstairs.

It avoided only 6 of 24 obstacles, and Roborock does not publish its climbing height. Its dock does not wash the mop pad.

The Tapo RV30 Max Plus stores up to 4 floor maps and climbs 22 mm thresholds. Tom's Guide measured 98.6% cereal pickup on hardwood and 99.7% on carpet. Two of them cost $499.98, each with a 3 L sealed bag dock rated for up to 60 days.

Its weak points are pet hair on carpet, at 67.8% in Tom's Guide testing, and no camera, so it bumps into objects and can catch on cables. Tapo does not publish its runtime.

Best for split levels and raised sills: Dreame X50 Ultra ($999.99)

Split level and older homes often have a single step or a tall sill between rooms. The X50 Ultra is rated by Dreame to climb 42 mm single steps and 60 mm two tier steps, so it can reach a sunken living room that would stop most robots.

Vacuum Wars measured 98% pet hair pickup with no hair wrap, 20 of 24 obstacles avoided and about 1,130 sq ft per charge. Its LiDAR retracts so the robot is 3.5 in tall under furniture. The dock washes mops in hot water and doses detergent.

It cannot climb a full staircase, and its dried stain mopping score was below average in Vacuum Wars testing. The Dreame Matrix10 Ultra ($1,399.99) climbed an 80 mm two tier step for Vacuum Wars but covered only about 757 sq ft per charge.

For big floors: Dreame D20 Plus ($309.99)

If each floor is large, battery coverage matters. Vacuum Wars estimated about 2,761 sq ft per charge for the D20 Plus, the highest estimate on our list, and it supports multi floor maps. Its dock bag is rated for up to 150 days. It avoided 0 of 24 obstacles, so it suits tidy homes.

What to avoid

The iRobot Roomba 105 Vac covered only about 630 sq ft per charge in Vacuum Wars testing, against a 1,015 sq ft average. That is short for a whole floor of a large house. It also picked up just 29% of flattened pet hair.

The Roomba 205 DustCompactor Combo sounds handy because it compacts dust onboard with no dock bin, but TechRadar had to empty it after 8 days and measured 78 dB. The Roomba Max 775 Combo stores 5 maps, but the robot weighs 12.8 lb, which is heavy to carry up stairs, and Tom's Guide found it hard to recommend.

Tips for homes with stairs

Map each floor once with the robot starting from its dock or a fixed spot, and name the rooms right away. When you carry the robot to another floor, check in the app that it has picked the right floor map before it starts.

Keep cliff sensors clean, since Eufy warns dirty sensors can miss a drop near stair landings. Keep stair runners a few inches back from the edge, and add a no go zone at the top of the stairs if your landing is dark or the robot hesitates there.

If you carry one robot, put its self emptying dock on the floor with the most traffic and plan to empty the robot's bin by hand after upstairs runs.

Questions people ask

Is there a robot vacuum that can climb stairs?

Not on sale in the US. Dreame has shown a stair climbing robot called the Cyber X, which Notebookcheck priced at €1,199 for Europe, but robots on US shelves stop at the stairs and need to be carried.

What is the best robot vacuum for a two story house?

The Roborock Q10 S5+ at $329.99. It stores up to 4 maps and removed 96% of embedded sand from carpet in Vacuum Wars testing. At that price, many owners can buy one for each floor.

Should I buy one robot vacuum or one per floor?

One per floor if your budget allows. Each robot keeps its own self emptying dock and schedule. A single carried robot works, but you must move it and empty its bin by hand on the floor without a dock.

Will a robot vacuum fall down the stairs?

It is rare. Cliff sensors stop the robot at the edge. Eufy says dirty sensors or unusual surfaces near a landing can cause misses, so clean the sensors and keep runners back from the edge.

Can a robot vacuum remember multiple floors?

Yes. The Roborock Q10 S5+ and Tapo RV30 Max Plus store up to 4 maps, the Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Flow handles up to four floors, and the Roomba Max 775 stores up to 5.
