Snapmaker U1
4 head tool changer for fast multi color with little purge waste
Researched by Riley Hart · updated Oct 30, 2026
Is the Snapmaker U1 worth it? The U1 is the most affordable tool changer printer, so it swaps between 4 colors or materials in seconds instead of purging, which saves both time and filament. It costs $699 as of Nov 4, 2026, and TechRadar scored it 4.5/5.
The U1 is the most affordable tool changer printer, so it swaps between 4 colors or materials in seconds instead of purging, which saves both time and filament. It is a great pick for anyone who prints a lot of multi color or soluble support models. Skip it if you mostly print one color or need ASA, nylon or carbon fiber, since those need the extra top cover and a hardened nozzle.
Best for: fast multi color with little waste. Skip if: you mostly print single color parts.

What independent reviewers found
- Editor's Choice. Tool swaps took about 10 to 12 s versus about 90 s on Bambu Lab. A PLA spiders print took 3 h 20 min with 4.4 g of purge waste, where a P1P took about 2 hours longer and used about 25 g more. A multicolor lettering print wasted just 0.76 g.
- Tom's Hardware
- Scored 4.5 out of 5 with average dimensional error of 0.056 mm. Tool changes took about 5 s and multi color prints ran two to three times faster than before; a robot tortoise finished in under a day versus 36 hours previously. Cons were add ons needed for some materials and early connectivity bugs.

Questions buyers ask
Why is a tool changer better than an AMS style system?
Each color has its own toolhead, so the printer swaps heads instead of purging filament. Tom's Hardware measured 4.4 g of waste on a print where a Bambu Lab P1P used about 25 g more.
Can the U1 print ABS or ASA?
Snapmaker says ABS, ASA, PA and PC need the optional Top Cover. Tom's Hardware still printed an ASA part on default settings.
Does it work with OrcaSlicer?
Yes. It runs Klipper firmware and supports OrcaSlicer and Snapmaker Orca.
