Short answer

As of October 28, 2026, the latest reports, from August 2026, say Tau Robotics offers humanoid robot house cleaning for $30 an hour, but only in San Francisco and only by invite code or waitlist. Sessions are limited to one hour. The robots are not fully autonomous. CEO Alex Koch told KTVU that each humanoid is jointly controlled by a human operator and AI, and CBS News reported that remote technicians in VR goggles supervise and step in. The robots vacuum, wipe counters and take out trash, but they cannot climb stairs. Tau plans other Bay Area cities next, then major US cities. You cannot buy a Tau robot.

What Tau Robotics charges

Tau charges $30 an hour, according to KTVU, CBS News and ABC7. KTVU reported on August 18, 2026 that cleaning sessions are capped at one hour, so a single visit costs $30. KTVU did not report a minimum booking.

For comparison, one visit a week for a year would cost about $1,560. You never own the robot, and there is no deposit or hardware to buy. That makes it the cheapest way so far to have a humanoid robot work in your home, if you live in the right city and get an invite.

Can you book Tau Robotics?

Only in San Francisco, and only with an invite. KTVU reported that access is controlled by invite codes and that residents can join a waitlist by email, listing their neighborhood. CBS News said the pilot, announced in July 2026, is open to 1,000 households.

Tau told KTVU it plans to expand to other Bay Area locations next year, then major US cities. CBS News reported a goal of 1,000 cleanings a week in San Francisco by 2027, then other US cities and international markets by 2028. Those are company plans, not dates you can book.

What the robots do

Tau and news reports describe a short list of tasks. These come from the company and news reports, not independent testing.

  • Vacuuming floors
  • Wiping kitchen counters and spills
  • Taking out the trash and clearing clutter
  • Deep cleaning such as baseboard dust, grout and behind kitchen appliances, per KTVU
  • CBS photo captions also show a robot unloading a dishwasher and cleaning a fridge
  • Cameras on the head and both wrists; microphones turned off; a one way speaker

Who is really controlling the robot?

A person, working with AI. CEO Alex Koch told KTVU, "Each humanoid is jointly controlled by a human operator and AI." A trained operator off site watches the robot's live camera feed during each visit. CBS News reported that technicians wear VR goggles, can step in when a robot gets stuck, and can put the robot into a safety mode where it lies down.

Koch told CBS the robot "cannot do everything on its own," and that humans currently decide where it vacuums. He told ABC7 that vacuuming is "working pretty well already" and that basic counter wiping is "pretty doable." Tau hopes to phase out technicians around 2028 or 2029.

What reporters actually saw

Most coverage relies on video from Tau. ABC7 reported no firsthand visit and noted one company video was sped up. UC Berkeley roboticist Ken Goldberg told ABC7, "I really think it is too early," and said picking objects off the floor and wiping under items is very hard. He also warned the videos may be sped up, have a human behind the scenes, or use a carefully set up room.

Goldberg told CBS the robots are heavy and can fall, may thrash while getting up, and could pinch people with their grippers. CBS reported that each robot costs about $50,000 to make. KTVU reported Tau has eight humanoids in total, most used for development.

Privacy

A remote stranger sees your home through the robot's cameras. KTVU reported that bedrooms and bathrooms are excluded unless you opt in, that you can mark other areas off limits, and that you can ask for footage to be deleted after a visit. Otherwise, footage is kept indefinitely. Koch told CBS that Tau keeps full control of the data and builds its own cameras, networking and computers.

Ask for the delete option if you book. Put away mail and bills before a visit.

Alternatives you can buy now

For daily floor cleaning, a robot vacuum and mop does more for less. A Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Flow or Eufy Omni S2 works every day with no operator and no hourly fee. If you want a humanoid of your own, 1X NEO costs $20,000 or $499 a month on preorder, and Weave Isaac 1 is $7,999 or $449 a month. See our full list of home humanoids.
